Personally, I really like A Modern Way of Letting Go, and (I Am) What I am Not. It's like old droney Idlewild man, but with...err, tunes. :)

Yep....  I'm more of a mellow chap myself, so I prefer that track and 'i never wanted' (etc), but it's generally a top notch album IMO.  At least another 2/3 good singles there.

Not really. :p

Right, since this was originally a thread where you could recommend good bits of new music rather than disgorge your whole record collection, I'll try and move back towards the original topic. Hah. Fat chance.

But anyway.

Here's a couple of things that I think have been particularly good recently. The first isn't exactly new, but it's hardly from 1977 either. :D

FUGAZI - The Argument - Usually Fugazi are all shouty-shouty and as a result people don't find them very, er...musical. But this one is! The Argument is their newest record, and disposes of (some of) the shouting for bigger, better-produced songs, some of which are even sloooow. Oh yeah, and one other thing: double drumkits. ;)

THE FLAMING LIPS - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - Just out last week! Buy it whilst it's still hot! I really like the Flaming Lips, because they write tuneful, melodic songs that are almost like pop, but without the associated lobotomization. And their live shows are excellent, with fake blood, giant gongs, balloons full of confetti and...teletubbies. Oh, and the majority of their recent songs are about love/death, but any band that can write songs called "Evil will prevail" and "Psychiatric Explorations of the fetus with needles" gets my vote. :)

Your turn!

Nope. Fugazi are Washington D.C. www.dischord.com is the label they run. The Flaming Lips are from Oklahoma City. Their site is www.flaminglips.com . The Flaming Lips are psychedelia; Fugazi are hardcore punk. :)

Oh, and Siamese Dream is the best Pumpkins album. All the rest are a bit...bizarro. :doubt:

SERIOUSLY, check 'em out. I got into loads of bands by sampling them on the internet (stick that, RIAA! I wouldn't have bought stuff by half the bands I have if not for Audiogalaxy!) :)

I buy twice as many albums as I would have had it not been for WinMX.

Listening to Helmet - Like I Care right now.

What a band.
What frequency are you getting? Is it noise or sweet sweet music? - Refused - Liberation Frequency.

hehe now I don't feel so old...

I think I saw every Dischord band at least 10 times in the 1980's, usually at the smelly old 9:30 club (before they moved).  I worked at the university radio station, and one of my roommates was the drummer for Government Issue, so I rarely had to pay for shows, either :)

I blame all the DC hardcore shows for my bad hearing now.  Really.

See, being old has its virtues. You got to see some of my favourite bands - and meet the people, I guess. Fugazi? Jawbox? :)

And yes, I understand that they really were that noisy. :D
