a tip for you high-poly FS modelers
when you model a ship/turret/gun platform/whatever, please try and model the detail based on the textures. this eliminates guess work, and makes the models far more accurate. the models you guys have been making are great and very well done, but most of the detail doesn't seem to corrispond with the textures. so please, for future reference, texture to detail. thank you.

this has been a message from the national council of modeling accuracy. (just because we have any real "authority" or any kind of "influence", and we don't technically "exsist", doesn't mean we can't tell you want to do! :D)

[sarcasm]
Too right! Will get right on that Mjolnir based on its textures.  Should we:

- slavishly tile the modelled texture willy-nilly across the entire model like in the original POF?

- keep the screwy, asymmetrical, twisted geometry like in the original POF?

- even bother to do any of this at all and just use the original POF?
[/sarcasm]

Call me crazy, but using the Mjolnir textures (to use my own object as an example) would produce... um... ****. Take a look a the original POF.

In fairness, though Mr. National Council of Modeling Accuracy, Venom is trying to follow the Herc2 textures, and I'm being absolutley SLAVISH to the Herc1 textures. Happy?

It'll be a while. Its crap. Go look at Venom's Herc2. Its NOT crap. Even as a WIP its stunning.

On a non-sarcastic side note, the reason the Mjolnir doesn't look like the game Mjolnir is that when I loaded the POF in Modelview32, it was horrible. The textures are tiled pretty crazily across the outer grinder, etc. Trying to work that into a model would have driven me absolutely insane. I throught that out with malice aforethought and put my own details on it. My line of reasoning is that if Volition COULD HAVE put something like that in the game they WOULD HAVE. Its not accurate, its not canon, its not authentic and its not meant to be. Volition can do accurate stuff if they want. I'm just supplying a nifty model to Darkage for the joy of modelling it and his joy of animating it.
