DUDE. I wouldn't recommend opening the monitor. You accidently touch that capacitor and you're DEAD.

I had the same problem with my old monitor, only blue and yellow showed up. I was told it was cheaper to buy a new monitor than to fix my old one, particularly if it's 5 years old.

Meh, capacitators are a lot less dangerous than they're made out to be. Like most things, really. I've taken apart a fair share of power supplies (with the huge 250 and 300 volt capacitators), even unsoldered the capacitators themselves for other projects, and never had a problem- I'm sure some of them are STILL charged.

Basically, unless you touch BOTH terminals simultaneously, and aren't, say, resting your arm on the shielding, so that your body IS the easiest route for the electricity to travel through, you'll never get a spark. So phenomenally stupid, near-unconscious people should stay away from monitors, yes. But that applies to electronics in general. Or heavy machinery. Or anything more complex and "risky" than a pencil.

Heh, I know what you mean - took the 350W PSU on my computer apart to clean the crud out of it (so dusty!) and shocked myself. But then I've been shocked by the mains supply of my house, and a traffic light once. Not that that makes me to good to get hurt - but at least I realise the risks of touching electrics.

Unfortunately I like this monitor to much to want to just chuck it away - it's a decent 20 inch monitor for graphics and such and it's been the best monitor I've ever seen running for some time now - I can't afford its equal in todays terms. I'd rather try and fix it (or get someone to fix it for me) if I can, rather than buy a new one.

Heh reminds me of my Search Light class during AIT, I set my O-Scope lead on the top strut of my workbench,...someone bumped into it and the damned thing fell right into the main cap, right across the leads. POOF The lead was a puddle and the scope became a fog machine :)

But then again ... those things were rated at 1 Million Volts ;7

Anyways Stryke's correct, as long as you dont TRY to grab it, or you're dump enough to stick your hand into a moniter with a metal braclet hanging on your wrist,...you're pretty safe.

Just do pay attention to any decals with words like :

Warning
Do Not Touch
No Licking

etc

You have to be careful touching the metal prongs on the monitor cable... not the power, the 25 pin (or however many it is) one...
There was enough charge in it to make my hand numb...

LOL My first day in AIT, the basic electronics course,...first time oneof the soldiers started falling asleep,...the teacher tossed him a fully charged cap :) He woke up rather quickly lol

Although the funniest one,... in basic troubleshooting course, one of the guys crossed his meter on a relay and sparked himself a bit,.. don't ask me how,.. but it set his digital watch BACK 2 hours.

Eh, I remember when I started experimenting with AC. Took a crappy cord, apliced it onto a something like 120v motor, and plugged it in. Ouch.

At least my house has circuit breakers rather than fuses. I was thinking of, on my last day of school, getting a huge coil and doing the same- with someone else holding it, of course.:D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Hehe, no I got lucky an each case - on the PSU I was only sticking two fingers in (to clean the dust out.. using a paper towel type stuff IIRC..) and with the mains power I was putting a plug in the socket - was touching the +/- on the plug terminals with the tips of the fingers that were wrapped round the plug. But there was no physical way I could've jerked and grabbed the thing... so again no electricution for me :D

meh, 240v going up your right arm is a lotta fun :blah: (actually happened to me Twice )

but i've seen a guy put a 12v (dc) lab power supply to his braces once intentionally.. Anyone remember jaws from those james bond movies (when 007 puts the lamp to jaws' teeth) well that's what it looked like..
