I never got that impression, but I guess I can still give an excuse... The GTVA needs more advanced sensor arrays on fighters/bombers for operations in a nebula theatre, as it had been decided that AWACS were too vulnerable, and a chained array of fighter/bomber advanced sensors would be both cheaper and more readily deployable.
Hence the shape, the very outer edge of the ring (where no secondaries would fit anyway) is given over to these sensors. Or something ^_^

What would happen if the toroid shape would slightly curve downward? Not too much, but just a tad. A bit like in a cylon ship. And the beams that are between the toroid and the main hull could also have larger fins. Sharp and smooth, but quite big. See what happens.

What would happen? It wouldn't look too different from the top, but on the bottom... We'll see, it shouldn't be too hard. Or do you mean curve downward as in lengthways, not on the edges? I'll have to find a pic of a cyclon ship, I guess.
