How much work would it require to import the ships from Starlancer to Freespace 2 (or 1)?? Has anyone already done this?

Well, you'd need to import the file into Milkshape, which has the only available StarLancer plugin. I think Thunder was working on this, but I'm not sure.

someone sort of did this, but then they stoped and nothing was ever done, if you want to do it it would be relitivly easy and a good learning experience for becomeing a new FS2 modder

I just got hold of the models from someone in COB form... I wouldn't know what to do with them if they bit me, sorry :)

have you got the textures?
See Microsoft encodes their TGA files... I extracted all teh model files and converted them but they have no textures and need to be remapped. The existing textures WOULD work IF I could find a program that could decode them. So far all the usual programs I used to open tga files have failed as they say "no image able to be read". Damn microsoft....

What makes it even worse SL doesn't even work normally on XP. I get past the intro movie and the game crashes. Plus Microsoft doesn't support SL anymore and their community has moved on to freelancer. I said to hell with it I may as well get some use outta it so I ported the models but I still am left with the texture problem... I mean I COULD use them but they would look lame with a random texture coveringthe whole model as 90% of SL ships use 1 texture map... I am sure I will learn someday but for now meshes themselves are my priority as otehr projects are more important to me... L8tr..

Remember the SL community does not extract their TGA textures, they convert other formats to their TGA format with SL edit ( an importing function only) when they create new ships.  When I asked about decoding the textures they were like "why?". lol

  • My thoughts go where no one knows to tread.
I... THINK I have once glanced upon a utility that might have extracted/decoded SL-files. But that was very long ago... Have you sifted through the SL-downloads at LR?

Warlock definately had converted SL ships, and I'm 90% sure they used the original maps - not actually owning the game, though, I can't be positive.

Here's the deal..

You use hog extractor to get the files outof the compressed game resource file. Then this gives you two sets fo files... the model is in SHIP format. and the TGA is STILL encoded..

Now you use Milkshape to convert the .shp file to any format you want, while it still has no texture thought the mapping stays intact. The TGA part is the hold up cause it won't open... I've asked around but the guru's have moved on it seems..
