most AMATUERS are too dumb to use procedurals. Most professionals use custom procedurals regularly.

Nah. I'm in too good a mood to be cranky. I'm just doing like you and taking random potshots. ;)

Makes sense then. Next question was gonna be how many years it took you to notice, but that works.

Besides, I do that because ever since getting stuck in ****hole County out here, I'm perpetually in a bad mood. I think.

Feeling a bit insecure there, Venom?

There, there- people who are particularly good would use both. You can't get as much detail with a bitmap, but you can't get as much control with a procedural.

Yup!  But I far prefer the modelling to dicking around with graphics programs, plus if you want to adjust the colors or the look on a procedural you don't have to go through a rigamole of steps..... so I use procedurals.
WE ARE HARD LIGHT PRODUCTIONS. YOU WILL LOWER YOUR FIREWALLS AND SURRENDER YOUR KEYBOARDS. WE WILL ADD YOUR INTELLECTUAL AND VERNACULAR DISTINCTIVENESS TO OUR OWN. YOUR FORUMS WILL ADAPT TO SERVICE US. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Procedurals are awesome. But algorithms can only do so much - I never leave any part of my art as purely auto-generated. I think going both ways is the best path.

Procedurals are dynamic. Bitmaps are non-dynamic. There's a reason they exist, and it isn't because of amatuers, Venom. Don't be the pompous ass I just accused Stryke of being.

Procedurals and images go hand in hand. An image gives you absolute final say in what a texture will look like. A procedural, on the other hand, gives a deterministic, algorithmic method of generating a texture. Using the two together is not a bad idea.

Procedurals and images are tools. Not using a tool for its designed purpose is silly.

I use more procedurals than bitmaps, you know. there's nothing difficult with using them, no UV mapping ( well usually ), no low resolution pb, no stretching of the map, etc. You just have to spend some time on it but, all in all, they're still faster to make than a bitmap.
So yeah, my point stands, amateurs use more procedurals than bitmaps, coz they're easier ( doesn't mean it'll look better, heh ).
Anyway, just browse a 3D forum and you'll see by yourself ( tho some "so called amateurs do absolutly incredible stuff with procedurals, and you'd think it's in fact a bitmap ).

... For Pete's sake.
Did I talk about what I do? Did I ever say I was a professional, to begin with? I'm tired of people always drawing asumptions from what I say.

I'm not drawing assumptions about what you DO, Venom. I'm telling you that declaring procedurals to be an amatuer's tool is being a pompous ass. If you're going to defend against an attack, make sure you're defending the against the attack I'm actually making. ;)

I, for one, hang out on a board dedicated to professional Lightwavers. People that work for Foundation Imaging, Argonaut Sheffield (used to be Particle Systems, etc) and the PROFESSIONALS do use procedurals. Regularly.

That sounded like a direct attack, mind you.
Anyway, I know they use them, they don't go "We're professional, we don't use procedurals coz we're professionals!!!".
This argument is very, very stupid, actually.
