Anime - the hot stuff to watch
You watched Yukikaze?  I'm waiting for the conclusion there.  Shame it was a 5-part OVA and not a 26-ep series.

All of Macross drifted off into mysticism, unfortunately. Robotech (which is seperate, go watch the later Robotech episodes and then watch Macross 7. I dare  you to tell me that's the same thing.) did too, but at least tried to disguise it.

All sci-fi-ish anime does that, unfortunately. Except a few of the UC Gundam spinoffs.

Hear, hear! I second that. It's allso one of the best animes EVAR...

Other good ones are (in my humble oppinion):

- Macross (just the part from the chrash of the SDF-1 on earth to it's destruction)

- Cowboy Beebop

- Rourin Kenshin (the movie..it kicks ass)

You know, I watched Vision of Escaflowne in one sit. It ended maybe 2-3 AM and I had to go to work the next day. ;)

That day I knew it. I was hooked. :D It was one of the first anime series I watched from beginning to the very end.

Hmm... some of you mentioned not so none titles - I would apreciate if you could write a short/brief summary on them.

(Please only write of titles you have seen and seen all of it!)
(Don't just quote a list of titles, opinionat, explain...ect.       )
(Don't write all known stuff - NGE, VoE, LEx and so on...this)
(thread is for forgotten gems that have somethign going    )
(for them beside hype.                                                          )

As for another not so known title:

Area 88

A modernized and relaistic version of the Count of Monte Christo.
Shin Kazama, the new rising star among the Yamato airline's pilots has it all: the thrust of the president, an engament with his daughter, and reputation of being a top-notch pilot.

All falls apart, when his 'friend' makes him piss drunk as has him sign some papers - apparently enlistment into the (fictional) Aslaan military as a pilot.
He is forcibly transfered to Area88 where few pilots end up of their own volition.
There are 3 ways out of the area: get 1.5 million dollars the fortfeit cost of your duty, serve 3 years or end up in a bodybag.

The last option is the most likely one since Aslaan is at civil war right now, and casulties are high.

There are two version of the show:

A 3 OVA made in the 80' with a politically not so correct, but very engaging and deep cutting story dealing with Shin's realization that if he is to survive he has to become a killer, but doing so he may never be able to live a normal life again, and the creaters didn't take the cheap way ouyt.

There is a recent, 13 episode TV remake, that inserts another character - a photoreporter -  into the story who is hell bent on taking a "special" picture of Shin.
The serias can be viewed as series of one-shots from the original story and is pretty much left without a conclusion.

Both shows do the rare fare of portraying accurate (for a anime or film in general) aircombat in the '70-'80 with well animated planes and some real aerial tactics.

On a side note, Gortef, try the Symphonic version of the Gundam Seed OST

Have it allready. I was a bit dissapointed, not as "massive" as I would have expected BUT great nevertheless.

Flaser, I'd advise not to be so restrictive, let the discussion go on its own weight as long as it stays on-topic. :) You've made the point and lets see what 'gems' we might yet find. :)

I can't restrict anyone, but I made this thread to introduce non-mainstream / recently made good anime.
If you feel compelled to discuss, you're free to do so, but I kindly ask anyone to do it in another thread, so this ones is left as a sort of "reccomended" stuff page.
Reviews or extanded counter review / recalls of your experience about an aforementioned or new anime are also welcome, but please keep general anime and personal anime preferance discussion elsewhere if you can help it.

Gasaraki

Ever thought that mecha were too catony or didn't like how Gundams seemed about pretty boys lately?
Tired of the super-shiny magic of Veritechs?

Gasakari is for you.
From the creators of Armored Troopers Votoms, that brought the hard, utilitarian design we love about Terran designs to mecha, which later inspired stuff like Heavy Gear and Battletech this show brings the aged and loved design back with a better look but retains the gritty and stuttering hard nature of the original.

Yushiro Gowa, the youngest son of the Gowa family is forced to take on several grueling responsibilities on his shoulder.
He is the shrine dancer, taught from an ealy age to perform the dance of Gasara - a task that leaves him in a painful trance.
Meanwhile he was also the prime test pilot for Gowa industry's latest weapon's development: The TA - Tactical Armor, bipedal weapons system.

When the TA is transfered to the JSSDF for testing, Yushiro is forced to go along. However on both his maiden dance at the shrine as well as the initial deployment of the TA a mysterious woman appears in his trance and later on the battlefield piloting another TA.

However he feels as if he had known her, like there was a time...

The TAs themselves are fishy - they are desingned with a simulated nervous system that adepts to the pilot over time - however so far only Yushiro has managed to push them on - but the rest of his squad's TAs followed in tandem...

...you do realize that the majority of the original BattleTech 'Mechs were either carbon-copies of or clearly inspired by Robotech mecha, don't you? I can cite much reference to this. They're the LosMechs, now, since Harmony Gold had a brain fart about their licensing and FASA decided not to fight it.

As for Gundam, clearly you don't know which ones I speak of. 08th MS Team, 0080, 0083. Those are the good ones. Avoid Gundam Wing (aka Gundam W) like the plague if prettyboys bother you, although frankly the storyline of the show is perfectly in keeping with the original Gundam: action-adventure with a heavy philosophical overtone.

I rather like the storyline of Gundam Wing, even though Quetra (sp?) is probably one of the single most annoying characters ever devised.

I spoke of the non-UC stuff, and I generally like Gundam, but Gasaraki is simply put - different.
BTW - check some later BT mech desings and check out Votoms - that show/design had awsome influence. Though yes - BT started out as pure Macross/Robotech Ripoff.

There was another series as well...Crusher Joe, I think it was called, that BT originally stole some designs from.

Speak of that, does anyone know anything about it?
