(WIP)Freespace - 2D (yes 2d!)
For my programing class I decided to make a 2d Style shooter based on Freespace 2. I felt like sharing this with you all being as how it is due the 21st, i was hoping to have a playable demo out before that time to test and so forth, to give ideas and whatnot.

The game is done completely in Shockwave (yes shockwave...), and will be a stand alone projector. So far i have the ability to move the fighter about, shoot lasers, missiles are coming soon, as well as the pacing scenery of space, stars, nebula, etc....

Sometime this weekend, hostiles will be implemented. Hostiles such as the SF Mara, Chimera, Hydra, etc. (nicos best works) as well as a Moloch and a Ravana Destroyer.

The game will use the original effects from the orignal game such as Starfields, Nebula, Planets, textures, ships, weapon efx, weapon sound-efx, warp-efx/sound-efx, and more.

Now to keep an open mind, i have provided a image of the really basic level of the intro. so i hope people will take this into mind as the first true standalone project outside the realm of 3d gaming, or RTS's....

As the title states this is a WIP, so please bare with it ^____^

well it was the only one i had in 2d, i just got home so im going to possibly change it to a Perseus, and other basic shivan craft. Eventually in the "hanger" section ima add the ability to change fighters at will. eventually guns too. but thats alot of LINGO programing lol....

ima have a projector out soon.


some side-2d shots of ships i got mod wise, i dont remember who made them, most i belive is aldo's, i think, but if not, im sorry for not askin or notifying those ahead of time. before i plan any "release", im going to put what i using in a new thread (or here if it doesnt get to cluttered), and ask those who created those respective ships, to put their SN/EMAIL so i can give them proper credit in the credits section for a beta release.

ok thanks, cause i think a majority of what i have is yours and Nico's/Venom's. its a hard process right now gettin this to work. i have to convert the original wav;s into MP3 cause some wav-formated music wont work, but the sound effects work fine. once i get the Engine working, im going to immplement levels. Also i plan to hopefully have a "AQUATAINE" Main Hall to select your pilot image, name, options, and launch.

dont expect alot of voice overs because the shockwave system itself begins to lag, especially with the detailed 2d stuff flying about. but one thing at a time ^___^!

also, even though im running on a 2ghz Celeron2, on 128megs, by the end of December im going to have atleast 1GIG of ram extra so i can give people a good idea of system requirements.

But so far any system with atleast:
900MHZ+256+SD/DDR ram will give decent to best performance on middle end systems. I am trying to see if their is an actual curve on performance.

Hmm, it would be fun to make a 2D FS2 shooter using OGL for 3D models.  In any case, good luck on your game and hopefully a demo will be ready for us to try soon =)

a 2d-shooter using 3d models is possible, like Einhander on the PS1, the only problem is, Shockwaves 3D Engine "Havok" is capable, but i havent gotten to that stage of development. and i hear its more complicated than most other 3d platforms.

however their may always be a possibility of one in the future!

BTW, I like the way the screenshots remind me of R-Type.  Anything that reminds me of R-Type has to be good :D

I've only played the SNES one and a bit of Final (PS2).  Nonetheless, R-Type is too awesome.

yea i was thinking overhead, it would be the same thing, but as all 2ds, its just as hard to do the animation depending on the way u design the initial platform. i liked the old raiden design, it was more appealing. however, what went from being a boot-leg Mario sidescrowler, is going to become a first attempt for me to create my first game from scratch....

and yes i apreceate the intrest into my work. I just got the "impact things" to work. so now i can shoot a ship and it disaperes...

but the "hostile" spawn and AI is still hard to do... so its taking more time now than expected.
