Some renders I made recently
I made these renders as images for my upcoming FS2 site, Gamma Draconis. I used Modelview to render the ships, Ulead PhotoImpact 7 for most of the editing, and Photoshop 6.0 for certain special effects like alpha channels.

This depicts my old method of doing beam cannons, which is PhotoImpact's "comet effect" made to look like a beam. I now use an alpha-channeled .tga image that I stretch and manipulate to make the beam whatever shape and size is necessary.


When I got Starforce working again yesterday with some table editing, I alpha-channeled several graphics from the game and used them as effects. All of the thruster glows and laser blasts are from Starforce, although the subspace effect uses the Narn twinarray image from TBP 3.0 and a "light bulb" effect with two points to simulate the glow and sticky-out point things (yes, it's supposed to be teal-green. The idea is to resemble the Sathanas subspace rift.).

Everything looks very nice, except the ship models themselves. If you have one available, a proper renderer (Like Max or (Hack, spit) TS)would be much better as you'd be able to have directional rather than ambient lighting on your models.

I don't have a 3D utility, but I'm going to get TS because an escape pod that someone made for me (who did it again? I forget) is way too big. It's around 200 meters long, so the dimensions need to be shrunk tenfold. I just downloaded Aurora as well.


The loading screen used for Starforce, depicting a Tereus-class destroyer coring an Erigonean Yie'Mazie-class cruiser. The scale is a bit off though (the Yie'Mazie is about one sixth the length of the Tereus). This also shows the new texture job I'm using for SIA ships. Since it didn't fit many of the other EA ship models well (the Lindos, rechristened Thanatos for Starforce, and the Telemus looked particularly bad), I'm strongly considering reverting to the old texture scheme.

There is no turret there. I couldn't find it, so I just put it in the general vicinity of where I remembered the Demon firing a beam. It looks cool, and that's what really matters.

Some renders I made recently
All the ships look a bit odd, probably because you copied them out of modelview. I also think you could improve the look of the lasers in the Starforce one. The nebulas in all of them are all very similar in appearance and the starfield in your last one is not good.

Other than that, I'd say they look very nice. I especially like the subspace opening in Starforce.
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Actually, the one shown in the render is not quite the same as the actual ani. The animation is the standard subspace effect recolored to the same green color as the Sathanas rift effect.

Oh yes, and the nebulae are all a hack of the "Clouds" effect in Ulead PhotoImpact 7. There are limits to what I can do with them. But it's supposed to resemble the Gamma Draconis nebula, which was itself kind of the same all over.

Yeah the lack of perspective shows itself a little plainly on the capship shots.  Truespace is better than nothing, simply because it can cope with a perspective view.

It's an excellent start - far better than mine. Keep at it. Try and work out a way that you can blend that motion blur into the background a little - there is a way, and I figured it out. More fun if you discover it yourself, though.

Also, you were only half-right about the HLP logo. If you can replicate it, I'll be impressed. ;)
