Anyone still have a RivaTNT? Run WinXP?
Hey guys,
My brothers computer has a bit of a problem at the moment.  The R9200 from Sapphire that we had put in there (its an older machine) decided to die.  There was a high pitched squeal and then it stopped.  POST beep code indicates it was a video problem and sure enough, replacing the R9200 with another card did the trick.

Seeing as its old, the family would rather not spend money on a newer card.  So we're trying to make do.  We've got two old and unused RivaTNT's that still work....but drivers appears to be an issue.

Ones a Diamond RivaTNT the other is Creative.

I can't seem to find nVidia or drivers anywhere that work for these cards and Windows XP.  Anyone know of where to find these?

NVIDIA ForceWare should still work with TNT's even though they are no longer listed.

When I ran my TNT2 on an old win 98 SE box, I used the general nVidia drivers without a lot of issues, aside from the thing being bloody slow.

Dead link BD.

Fury, are you sure about that?  The TNT isn't listed in that initial process of figuring out your card and OS that nVidia has everyone run through.  Anyone have some experience with that?

I guess worst comes to worst and I try it out....hopefully nothing goes wrong :)

The worst that'd happen is the thing won't boot. It's not like it'll kill the  machine completely... I've got a TNT2 that worked fine with XP when it was in my dad's computer (he upgraded everything a few years ago), but I duno about the original TNT...

pyro-maniac, a correction if you please. Even if video card driver is completely screwed, you should still be able to boot windows to safe mode. In the worst case you need to reinstall Windows, but I really can't imagine why it would go to that just because of video drivers. The computer itself will always boot, but the OS probably has something to say if there's a problem with video drivers.

And TNT2 is nothing more than upgraded TNT, I see no reason why older TNT's are not supported by the driver.

And to prove my point, I took a look at nv4_disp.inf (66.93's mind you) and RivaTNT is still present there.

Looks like not even the TNT is officially supported by the Forceware drivers off nVidias website.  Still haven't tried them.

It'll still boot, you can still run in safemode...I've recovered from worse :D

IceFire, if you look at the post above yours, Mr. Fury has indicated that the TNT should run with the Forceware driver.

It works on win2000, I know for a fact, since my parents were using it on their P3 machine up until I got them to upgraqde some internals, and snuck in there and switched it with my old GF2...

So, yeah, it should work under XP, too.

Was easy as pie to find.  Personally, I wouldn't go much farthern than the 40.71 series for anything older than a GF2 because theres no real benefit other than having a later version of the driver.

I have a xp pro that runs with a TNT2.  Just keep using the same set of drivers that I am using with my FX cards....

for basic (and I mean BASIC) Functionality, I've gotten the old driver from Dell actually.  scary that the file is under two megs in size, the entire driver that is.  It seemed to work OK in XP but I really didnt do anything with it.  I dont expect to do anything fancy with it either.
I had a problem though with the Forceware drivers on my TNT - the driver will not detect the card, or vice versa.  Even drivers sub 40s would not find the card, I had to resort to using that scary dell driver.  The website does indeed say though Geforce series and TNT2.  I believe this was due to the nature of the chip at the time.  It still had the RIVA stuff in it, meaning it was an upgraded Riva 128.  I dunno, but for the life of me, I could not make any Forceware drivers work for this card.
But thanks for finding these.. these shall come in handy indeed!

Naa, the RivaTNT was a entirely new card design.  I remember readng about it before I bought the first one ages ago (and then a second one because that computer needed something with a bit more oompf).

The 40.71 series installed just fine and works ok.  Nothing special but it does the job.  Thanks!
