I'll agree with changing the music you listen to. In high school I was a kid always trying to be different, but I'd listen to such dark and depressing stuff. I would constantly feel down and depressed, and in my first two years of college it totally broke down my ability to keep any sort of relationship with friends, women, anyone.
Then, after changing a few things such as how I thought about things, seeing a decent psychologist (the kind that doesnt perscribe drugs, though I was on wellbutrin for a while as a recomendation from my doctor in college) and changing what I listened to. I played GTAIII for the first time on PC and was strangely compelled to the MSX radio station. That opened my mind to the mind-blowing world of Drum & Bass.
A lot of techno is just... mindless doot doot doot music. DnB encompasses so much that I like, and has a lot more to offer than just trance-y synths. A lot of it is dark, yet.. different. Doesnt have a lot of lyrics about being sad or anything, and a lot of tracks actually make me glad that I have a set of ears that work, and can enjoy something this, well.. Different!
I guess I found that something that makes me different than everyone else, yet no one really knows about it. I'm just your plain average joe on the outside. I believe music does have theraputic qualities about it, and if all you listen to is dark, depressing stuff... it may be a major influence on how you'll feel. After all, we are products of our environment... to some extent.
yup. time for bed.
