+1 for the Xbox360.
Quote
Forbes has just announced that Final Fantasy XI is coming to Xbox.

Securing Final Fantasy XI for the Xbox will be seen as a key victory for Microsoft's campaign to overtake rival Sony as the king of the hill in the video game console business. If nothing else, it should make the Xbox more attractive to potential buyers. That's because people buy the hardware based on the available games.

The Forbes article also confirms that some of the top-selling current Xbox games will work on the Xbox 360.

This can't be good for Sony.

Interesting... I so badly want an MMORPG on the Xbox or 360. Gimme!

Some top selling Xbox games will work on the 360? Why only some? Bastards.

notice how it says "some"? it'll probably not be much more than half-assed emulation.

It makes sense now why the Halo2 engine was written with 360 compatablity in mind.

So only a few popular games will be supported. It is a bit of a worry.
The new Xbox seems appealing with its games and PC compatability with media center. But the PS3 has got to have some tricks up its sleeve with nearly double the power of the 360.

One can only wait and see I guess...

Interesting that all 3 next-gen consoles have some form of backwards compatibility (Revolution is compatible with GC and downloaded N64, SNES, NES, and PS3 is compatible with - apparently - PS2 and PS1 games).

Incidentally, Final Fantasy is not an xbox360 exclusive; immediately after making that announcement, the Square bod nipped over the PS3 unveiling and confirmed the series would make it to PS3 'in some form' (after showing a tech demo of an updated FFVII).

EDIT; apparently FFXII is confirmed for PS3.

NB: backwards compatibility story; http://gamesradar.msn.co.uk/news/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=35848&subsectionid=1586 - says all games are backwards compatible.

They're not making it, though; they said that (Square) at the PS3 demo.  I think FFXII was officially announced shortly after that.

FF7? Where'd you get that? The only FFs mentioned were FFXI and FFXII.

Square shown a tech demo at the PS3 unveiling showing a 'reimagining' of FF7; I think there's a link to the movie somewhere around here.

Of course, the fact that FFXI has been available (in North America) for PS2 since 3/04, and PC since 10/03, doesn't really make this as much of a coup for MS as it could have been. There's also the fact that I've heard the graphics are going to be identical to the PS2 version, even thought the system is more powerful and time has gone by.

However, it could possibly indicate that future iterations of the series may appear on the Xbox.

Er... except that may be wrong.

States that games need to be recompiled for the Xbox360; so you'd probably have to be paying for the Live subscription service to DL the compatible version at the very least.

Very confusing.

Incidentally, the PS2 had a fully blown Ps1 emulator when it was released.  I think the GC version of the Ocarina of Time, etc, that came with WindWaker had an emulator on the disk (obviously no point having it in hardware with the different media types); I'd expect both the Ps3 and Revolution to use emulators as well, so it seems very odd if MS didn't / hadn;t followed suit.

The only reason I could think of would be to either sell 'new' dual-compatible versions of the Xbox1 games (i.e. with the new 360 code as well as the original), or (more likely IMO) to try and have another reason to punt the Live subscription.
