(NB: the BBC - including both TV and radio - is publicly funded; everyone with a telly pays a license fee which goes towards the cost of it, unlike the commerical channels which rely more predominately on advertising.  

Unfortunately, the majority of the money seems to go to digital tv stations with documentaries about Boticelli that noone ever watches)

Thing is, I'd much rather pay for documentaries on Boticelli and other obscure stuff than have to choose between Celebrity Love Island and Big Brother 48 for entertainment. If it weren't for the Beeb we'd be stuck with American-style lowest-common-denominator TV (not that ITV isn't like that already, but I can choose to watch something with a bit more substance instead), and we'd be even stupider as a nation...
