i cant really name a good nightwish-alike of the top of my head. its probibly the only pairing of power metal and opera vocals ive heard. im not really into power metal myself.  im more into the goth metal, but not to the same degree as black or doom.

but definately check out therion, theatre of tragedy and leaves'eyes (essentially liv kirstine + atrocity), tristania, battle lore (alot of beauty and the beast vocals and alot of songs about tolkin fantasy).
I can no longer sit back and allow communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

Lacuna Coil?

And if you're looking for a unique sound, check out Children of Bodom, Atheist, Cynic, and Finntroll, and probably some later-era Death (Human, ITP, Symbolic, TSoP)

I love Lacuna Coil, but the vocals are not very opera-ish.
I'm still trying to read up on all the definitions of metal :D I don't really care what the genre is, I just like the music, but apparantly you have to know all the seperate genres and sub genres to not sound like a complete idiot.
Anyway, I'll check out most of those bands :)

By the way, do check out Kidney Thieves (they're more industrial though), Hollenthon, and E.S. Posthumous. The latter two are more "epic" types, while Kidney Thieves is an interesting listen.

The All Music Guide has the best non-biased descriptions of all the metal subgeneres.  There are some unofficial ones that people use, such as throwing the "Progressive" term out in front of a regular genre to indicate talent/complex music (eg: Progressive Thrash = Megadeth, Metallica, Watchtower), or combiniations of generes.  I've heard Bodom described as Symphonic black power metal (which is an oxymoron, the only tr00 black metal band is Living Colour).

Wheeeeeeeeee!. That was f*cking awesome. Megadeth scared the **** out of the indie kids on the Friday, and played a brilliant show. The weather was pretty tidy, if overcast for the most part.

On Saturday, Anthrax and Velvet Revolver were brilliant (the pit went nucking futs when Slash appeared), and Sabbath.... well, Sabbath were Sabbath. Amazing show, Ozzy on form, the place packed out to capacity. And me 20 feet from Tony Iommi. :D Also saw Meshuggah on the second stage. They are very, very scary live. Good stuff though. The weather was better than Friday, with some very strong sunshine in the afternoon, leading to sunburn during Anthrax's set.

On the Sunday, Lacuna Coil played a great show on the second stage (we were going to watch Nightwish on the main stage, but they had a ****ty mix, and the mate I was with hated it so we left), and we caught the last half of Slayer's set. Not a huge fan, but they played a tight set and I was impressed. Likewise with Slipknot - I hate their music (with the exception of Duality), but their stage show was excellent - pyrotechnics and epileptic lighting etc. Very impressive, and a hard act to follow. After a rather long break, where numerous female members of the crowd flashed to the cameras (to loud applause, I might add  ), System came on. They played brilliantly, though they looked exhausted (jet lag or some such probably), and they hardly talked to the crowd at all. Instead, they played straight through the set, with no encore (though it was nearly a two-hour performance), finishing with Sugar. The weather was horrible, however. The ambient temperature was fairly warm, but the wind was icy, and it was freezing as a result. It also rained briefly during Slipknot's set. Horrible.

All in all, what a weekend! Expensive, and sleeping in a tent for 4 days without proper facilities (the toilets were horrendous as to be expected, and the showers were definitely to be avoided) was rather unpleasant, but I don't care. Brilliant bands, brilliant shows, and thoroughly good fun for all...

Did Slayer have their "Raining Blood Machine" with them?  That would be awesome to see live.

Nah, not that I could see anyway. They played at like 5 in the afternoon, so it was broad daylight. hardly anything in the way of effects - not even much lighting. Kind of disappointing really, given the spectacle that Slipknot and System put on. But then they had some huge dark clouds and then sunset to set off the stage show.

I suspect they wouldn't be allowed to use it, because of the mess it would make. The backstage crew had a hell of a time rigging up the stage set for Slipknot anyway (took them nearly half an hour), so cleaning up pools of "blood" would have made it even longer. Pity really, though the fans seemed happy enough...

EDIT: Ooh, one more thing to add - go and see Lacuna Coil if you ever get the chance. Their singer is seriously hot. :D
