I've been working on this for the past few days; it's my first small craft made in Sketchup (only the pilot/seat/sticks were made in MS3D) How's it look? It's at 4029 polies right now.

(This is my own universe, and the same one as the past two ships I've made)

It's not bad but it looks like it was designed by Gonzo. ;)

  • What the hell are you lookin at?
yup i agree with Maeg. looks like Kermit started a Design team and chose Gonzo, the Rat and the band to help create a specially designed Miss Piggy Recon/Assault Fighter.

Could you try reducing the Humpish thing on the nose. could that be somesort of sensor suite? also could you try and add some detail to the "Tail."

It's a cool concept but it really looks like a speed bike from Tron. it doesn't look very detailed for 4k polys. Are a lot of those in the pilot?

I'd say most of the polies are probably in the nose (which is a sensor system), and the vents around the ship.

Vents with less (bigger) holes = better than small vents with hordes of small hordes..
Takes less polies and is more visible.

Also, quite a few polies comes from the engine exhaust of the ship. Lots of smoothing there.

I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

It's smoothed, but not in the geometry.  The vast majority of the wasted polys are from those intakes because not only do they themselves consume polygons, they also split the surrounding faces many, many ways.  There are some optimization hacks that you can use to get around that though.
who needs a signature? ;)

Looks like an Orion and a Kestrel(TVWP) mated with Gonzo...

Yea, I just took out the vents and it dropped the polycount to 2900 or something, which is much more acceptable imo.
And is the nose really that bad? :p

Don't take this wrong, but this seems to be one of your more lackluster designs, as it looks like you took a cube, and shaped it to how you wanted it from side view, and simply used the bevel tool on the sides...
On the plus side, the cocpit is really nice.

You can accomplish those vents with textures if you do it right...in fact you should.

Are you listing polys as Triangles?   I would almost guess more than 2.9K considering all the smooth edges.   All of those rounded edges, take for instance the nose or cockpit...will end up being hundreds of triangles when converted to a useful game format...just be careful of round things...sometimes you have to lower cyliders(for instance) to like 8 to 12 sides to cut down on this very same problem...obviously just a problem with large round things.

Just a thought.

It's make a nice EW or Recon ship though, the front section loaded up with Sensors or Jamming equipment. I wonder if we could talk the SCP guys into creating a 'Targetting speed factor' tab;e entry, which adjusts the missile lock-on speed  of ships in range by a multiplier. AWACS ships could increase that multiplier, Jamming systems could decrease it.
