Out where I live here, this last weekend we had the open-road races that occur like twice a year. The state basically shuts down the highway north of Las Vegas for the day to let certain models of cars race on a 2 lane strip of highway. Anyways, what I saw there blew my mind. A Chevy Silverado pickup truck, which raced in the "unlimited speed" class. Put simply, those who race in unlimited can go as fast as they want without being disqualified. The tagret speed for this pickup truck was 170 MPH according to my time-sheet. (I took part in timing the racers passing our checkpoint) and.. it was awesome. Not awesome like a hot dog, but awesome as "the rapture" awesome. Seeing this truck come speeding down the highway near 150-160 MPH, was incredible. Apparently from what I was told by the other people I worked with, the truck was indeed supercharged, had an original big-block engine inside of it, tuned and such to make the vehicle move so quick. It had a lot of ground effects on it too which apparently help with stability and aerodynamics. The truck had also been lowered, and had pretty small tires on it. Anyways.. the sound, was incredible. You could hear it about a mile away, like a faint buzzing in the distance.. as it closed in on the checkpoint it got so loud that when it passed the time sensors, you could literally FEEL the air pressure from the truck hit you in the face.. Not quite a sonic boom, but incredibly loud compared to all of the cars that zoomed by all day doing the same speeds. It's so.. wow.. incredible.. I know that we have a video of the truck zooming by, and I can probably get still shots from it and post them sometime. Absolutely amazing. The unlimited cars apparently are 800+ horsepower in this race. Serious ****.
