If you don't like them you remake them ;)
Oh and it's not jpeg compression - it's the contrast. They couldn't be seen on a black background easily without nocking it up a few notches....

Anyways - avatars are still an experiment - depending on what we can do for the hosted site people we might remove them completely again or keep them. Time shall tell!
