Freespace 2 options doesn't "see" my joystick
My Logitech Extreme 3D Pro works fine for other games. I'm not sure where to look first to change something. Under:
Control Config.> Ship> I'd like to bind Turn Left to the corresponding movement on my joystick,
rather than the default keyboard setting of Pad 4.
Instead, the question mark just keeps flashing (it doesn't see it when I use the axis).
Nothing happens like if you'd hit another non-conflicting key and successfully replaced it.
I'm running the stock Freespace 2 I downloaded from gog.com on Vista 64.

Re: Freespace 2 options doesn't "see" my joystick
The specific "Turn Left" setting accepts only single keys or buttons as input, not axes.  There should be another entry labeled "Turn (Yaw) Axis" further down the page; that's what you'd want to use for the X-axis on your joystick.

Oh, and :welcome:

You should get Freespace Open, if only for the tremendous graphical upgrades and brilliant new campaigns.

if you use the fsopen upgrade etc all will be fine and turning left/right/up/down doesnt need to be mapped it will use the joystick....all on its own

Cool, thanks everybody. Glad to have found the game and community with so much open code.

I've noticed that the center spring on my EVO Force doesn't work on Win7. Has anyone else noticed this?

Certainly. Tried both the Windows and Saitek drivers.

well, now I'm running FS Open 3.6.9 and it's just the same thing. The 4 directions of the ship I expected to be controlled by my joystick -- pitch forward, pitch backward, turn left, and turn right are still just irrevocably mapped to keys 4,8,6, & 2 (won't recognize my joystick when try to re-bind) and the only things the joystick are consigned for are some kinda Yaw axis = joystick/mouse x, pitch = joystick/mouse y, Bank axis = joystick rX axis...

gotta say this is really kinda disappointing -- I guess the guy above saying I was asking the wrong question was probably talking about all versions of FS? Or can I pitch "up & down" and left and right with a joystick with Open and it's just not seeing my joystick on my end?
otherwise, there's not as huge of a point to having the stick in the first place then, period... & I'm Capt. Obvious
thanks

scratch that, I'm editing this message now that I got back after turning on my mouse and I see how it's whipping the ship right around nicely. Yeah, ok, so the game's probably just not seeing my joystick like my other games for some reason. wonder why not?

As I said above, that's exactly where you want your joystick to be bound.  The axis control options are intended for full-fledged controllers like a joystick or mouse, while the individual turn left/turn right options only accept on/off inputs like keyboard keys.  Don't worry about the number pad being bound to those individual controls; if everything else is set up right, it won't interfere at all with what your joystick is doing.

That being said, if your joystick isn't registering at all in-game, is it showing up as selected in the Audio/Joystick tab of the FS2 Open Launcher (or in the Setup menu of the retail launcher, for that matter)?  If so, in the in-game Options menu, try turning the Mouse setting to Off; I can't remember if it disables the joystick by default when it's turned on.

(Also, instead of FS Open 3.6.9, you'll want to use the most recent release candidate of 3.6.10, which you can find here.)

You might want to try getting the 5.5d launcher if you don't have it already.

Re: Freespace 2 options doesn't "see" my joystick

YAY, I hadn't noticed the Audio/Joystick tab of the FSOpen launcher. In there AND under Advanced I changed over to the correct joystick or joystick driver and I'm in biz!
thanks
