Or maybe the drive through's cashier's shift just ended, and the next person didn't know his drink was already paid for. Then the person who was "next" for the free drink paid for the drink.

Altruism, or a scam to get twice the money out of one drink?

Or you could be grabbing lattes for the office.  At $5 a coffee, that's only 10 lattes.
