Boystrous 19 year old temp at work slapped me in the face with an envelope and laughed it off as playful. So I shoved him over a desk and laughed it off as playful. It's on camera so I can plead reasonable force.  Temp is now passive.

That's a nice thing to do.

Looking at the comments, I found this gem:

..which makes one wonder whether the whole thing was more an example of the effect of social pressures than altruism.

Re: Starbucks customers do altruism
The first person was altruistic, but the others may have been pressured or genuine (hard to tell).

It's still an interesting story though.

Re: Starbucks customers do altruism
how were the others pressured in any way?

all they had to do was say "oh cool - it's paid for? awesome", taken the drink, and driven away... they'd never see anyone else in line again, so they don't know who they screwed over.

in fact, i'm betting the person that broke the chain was someone who wasn't paying attention, on the cellphone, etc. that just took the coffee and drove off

Re: Starbucks customers do altruism
You're actually probably right.

I'd feel like an ass for not paying for the next guy, so I guess there's "pressure". However, if I wouldn't feel bad, I wouldn't feel any pressure either. Therefore there's no "pressure" that would change anyone's decision, because anybody affected by any pressure would probably pay anyway. </head explodes>

There is no need for any of that.  Please don't get the thread locked just because you don't like Starbucks.

I like starbucks coffee, especially those over-sweetened coffee-like drinks.  I just don't like some of my money ending up in the pockets of freedom-hating evil zionists.

In fact, if I had known how much of the R&D money from Intel ends up in israel, I'd be running an AMD processor right now.  I kinda had a research lapse on that one.

Hush, Turambar, Starbucks is a major Democratic donor!

AIPAC donates tons of money (bribes) to both parties.  Doesn't make it right.

I wonder whether the chain was actually broken by someone, or there was simply no one immediately after the last person to have their order paid for. Hmm.

Yes, but the fear is someone will know them :).  And being known as the "greedy sob who broke the chain" is something most people try to avoid.

Re: Starbucks customers do altruism
Well if you look at it this way, the story was noteworthy enough to get in the papers, if there was actually someone who broke the chain and someone did recognise him (even as simply being a semi-regular customer) there's chance that they might decide that it would be interesting to speak to the person who broke the chain.

And then for the rest of your life, you're the guy who broke the Starbucks chain. :p

Breaking a "pay it forward" chain at Starbucks isn't quite as bad as being "dog-****-girl".
