Freespace 1 on Win XP
I've installed Freespace 1 from my original discs on Windows XP but the game won't start (I don't get an error message, or a black screen - the mouse pointer changes to an ampersand during a few seconds and that's it, just the desktop is displayed).

I haven't patched it yet (can't seem to find the patch anywhere), so perhaps this has something to do with it... Any thoughts?

Have you tried running it in Compatibility mode?

Re: Freespace 1 on Win XP
When I first installed FS1 on my Windows XP an error would pop up as well, but that error was an unstable disk drive or along those lines (Failing dll prompt or something). I just clicked ignore, and went about my business. It worked fine after that

I don't think a patch is needed as I didn't get one. Could be something wrong with your disk drive, some background applications, or damaged/dirty disk.

Instead of letting it autostart, pop in the disk and then turn off the computer. I know this could possibly cause problems with the computer, but it's the only way I know to stop disk autostart. After such is done, go to the documents and select the files on the disk. Proceed by clicking the launcher

This is what limited information I know
"No"

Are you running 32 or 64 bit?

Re: Freespace 1 on Win XP
Thanks for all the input. I'm running 32-bit. I figure the discs are ok since the installation went without a glitch... One of the posters above (sorry, can't remember the name right now ) mentioned something about a port - is it something like fs2_scp?

I'm really sorry if there's already been a thread for this but, while the instructions for FS2 are very clear on the "Getting Started" topic, I've found little reference to running FS1. Any help greatly appreciated!

That's because most of us run the FreeSpace Port (FSPort) mod on FS2_Open now, although some of the older folks around here claim that FSPort can never fully replicate the actual FS1 itself.

It was terran_emperor who mentioned it, what you are looking for is right here. You just run it like a mod on FS2_Open.  ;)
