It's a linkfarm, according to whois that's as of 24th of November last year. :(

A bit of research reveals that when a domain expires it is not immediately put back into the pool or available for registration. It goes into a 30 day grace period inwhich the original owner can still renew at regular price. It then goes into a redemption period where the registrar's details are shown in the WHOIS. (in this case FINDYOUANAME or overseedomainmanagement.com) The original owner can still renew but at a much higher price ($~$200). This may be the period that freespace2.com is in. If still not claimed it then goes into a 5 day Pending Delete period where it is too late to reclaim. At the end of 5 days it "drops" and goes back into the pool of available domain names for anyone to purchase.

I dont know how reliable that information is though.

If it's true, According to the above info, it's readily available right?

* jr2 has an idea:

1. Someone who has the resources, buy the site.

2. Turn it into a useful site with a link pointing to HLP, and the rest containing ads to different known, well-respected items (software, subscription, etc. like BitDefender AV, Netflix, etc) until the purchase price is paid off, at which point you could either switch it to a re-direct to HLP or keep the ads and use the revenue to pay download / site hosting fees.

Thoughts?  :nervous:

Would that be legal, license-wise? Using the FreeSpace name to make money?

Err... so us developing FreeSpace mods and having Google ads is bad then?  I'm saying just have ads on the site, not to... I don't know how you're thinking it.  I meant more like "Welcome to freespace2.com.  Please visit HLP for the latest MODs and FS community etc."  And just have banner ads for programs we know are good around the site with recommendations for circumstances that they would be useful.  Sort of like having reputable business owners' cards in your shop.  So while your customer gets his coffee, if he needs auto work, you know where to send him.
