(SOLVED)Wifi stays connected, but internet keeps timing out
I've got this interesting problem that's probably basic somewhere in the internet setup. But, i'm pretty sure it isn't the modem.

My friends have dsl which is connected to the wireless router which provides wireless internet to two laptops. The connection keeps timing out. This started doing this after i enabled wpa2 aes encryption. The mtu sort of fixed the problem (it worked better at 1472 as opposed to 1460 in the router (1460 is recommended by the isp, but wasn't working entirely well)).

Basically now it takes a little bit longer before surfing the web times out on something. The wireless connection doesn't drop, just the internet times out?

What can i do about this? I even tried a different router with the same results.

Every pilot's goal is to rise up in the ranks and go beyond their purpose to a place of command on a very big ship. Like the colossus; to baseball bat everyone.

Re: Wifi stays connected, but internet keeps timing out
Try putting better antennae on the router?  If it can't accept external antennae, try getting one like the ASUS RT-N12 (I love it; I've owned 3 and they all still work, I sold one to a buddy and I use two).

Make sure firmware is up to date.

IIRC, WPA2 encryption basically is a lot harder to transmit / receive than the useless WEP, a lot of cheap routers or routers near the edge of connectivity seem to have this issue.

Oh, be sure that if any system using the router has Windows XP, that it's updated to SP3, as SP2 on down do not support WPA2 natively (the crappy add-on connectivity software does, however, I avoid those like the plague).

Re: Wifi stays connected, but internet keeps timing out
the environment is windows 7. I'll try seeing if switching the encryption to wep makes a change. Basically the only person around to crack wep would be myself. Encryption is the only thing i can see that would be affecting the connection so much. It's doing the same thing with two different routers.

And yes, it is people using wireless at a range. They had no problem before encryption. Now they do. So i'll apply what i've learned here.

EDIT: Got the problem solved by doing nothing. The local internet up here was performing maintenance for about a week making stuff time out a lot. Stuff was timing out for me, but not as badly as the person who needed the work done. It's been different for people all across town. Just got a call back with the people telling me that everything is nice and skippy. So, awesome in other words. Thx for the help anyway. I now know something more about wpa2 encrypted connections being broadcasted in the least.
