Don't take whey protein. Me and my friend realized this after 5 months of 5 day intense work out regimen. My friend, happy with his weight just wanted to transform his beer gut fat into muscle. He wanted to work out with me for motivation. A month in he decided to get crazy and try whey protein (his work out goal got more ambition). I went along with it too because it was free whey protein for me. As many pounds i weighed i was how many grams of whey protein i had every day before working out (150 pounds, so 150 grams a day).
The last 4 months of the 5 day intense work out regimen. I only gained 8 pounds. My friend gained 30 pounds. He stopped taking it and i did too. I decided to break routine for a week break of working out, and i lost the 8 pounds (fast metabolism makes it very hard for me to gain weight, and i wouldn't bet my life if i could keep whatever weight i do gain). We continued the intense 5 day workout thing every week. And in two weeks after stopping whey protein intake, he lost 30 pounds. Alas, he was finally back at his normal weight he was at in the first place with a beer gut (a weight he was happy with in the first place), but with no beer gut.
He had originally lost the beer gut a long time ago after the first month of working out (wasn't a super beer gut). We continued working out for months and months after that anyway because it was really a great and fun routine.
Basically, none of us would have wasted our time with it if we knew it was going to be so temporary for months of working out almost every day. I summarize whey protein like this: whey protein, good for a fast breakfast in the morning on the go if you don't have pop tarts.
I do however recommend taking 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon a day for it's thermogenic weight loss benefits along with work out regimen and healthy eating.
