And if you need to use WMP did you install the codec packs?

you didn't throw any SVCD's at it, then? I did, and it killed itself. sure, so does WMP, but still. Radlight is a good player.

Thunder, just use Media Player 6.4.  Best version of MP there is without the bloat.
Gargoyles, Season 1.  Buy it, or DIE! :)

I tend to agree with you, as that is the version I use, but:

I took a DivX movie over to a friends' to watch, and he had a really old computer. Not quite sure exactly what, but probably in the P200 range. Needless to say, it wasn't able to play the movie (copied to HD first) smoothly enough to watch in MP v6.4. So I figured what the heck, let's try WMP7 - it's installed and all. Well, no one was more surprised than I to discover that WMP7 was able to play the movie with enough of a sembalance of smoothness that it was watchable!

Now, since I'm not all that pressed for DivX performance on my current computer, I'm still avoiding adding the crash-prone WMP7 into my nice clean Win2k installation - v6.4 works fine for me. But still, WMP7 surprised me quite a bit! ;)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I don't get this all MP stuff. What is to wrong with MP 7 --> ?

For me they have worked just fine. With MP 8 I just disable the two settings under  "Internet settings". And you can always block their internet access in firewall.

But still, I use ZoomPlayer as my primary movie player, and winamp (2.81 as 3 is buggy) for my music.

Eh?  Every version of MP since 6.4 has been a memory HOG for me.  Damn thing eats up more RAM than ICQ and Photoshop!  Hell, last tim I used MP7 was back when the fastest processor out was like 500MHz.  I tried to play a DivX movie (keep in mind that this is back when DivX first became popular) that a friend of mine made.  He asked around what ppl's specs were.  At the time I was running a K6-2 350 with 256MB of PC100 running at 133MHz.  It played fine on 6.4, but it skipped frequently in 7.  I haven't had time to download it again and try it on 8 yet, but I've upgraded since then so I doubt I'll be able to tell a diff. :)   (I was running *gag* WinME at the time as well...though it was sluggish on 98SE as well.)

Yiz can get the beta of 9 now. If your pc is up to it ;7

And just to warn people: that Nimo codec pack buggered up my movie players. Mebbe a case of conflicting codes of summat, but I followed the instructions so Nimo gets the blame.

Nimo didn't work here either but I uninstalled all my codecs (DivX mainly) and installed ACE, works like a dream
Habeeb it...
