Look at you, insect...
... panting and sweating as you run through my corridors...

I challenged the perfect, immortal being, and I'm happy to say that the Machine Mother is toast. :D

Allow me to just say that the Body of the Many SUCKS and the last level is really damned annoying.

Now, where's my System Shock 3? ;)

HELL YES.

I loved it when it came out, but my computer crashed and I lost all my saved games (I had just gotten to the Body of the Many). I decided to not go back and play it then. About six months ago, I started playing it again (its amazing how fast the game is on a machine with five times the specs it was designed for). I got to the Body of the Many again, and just set it down for another couple of months. I just beat it for the first time this morning. Then I went and did it again. :D

I did end up wishing that I hadn't used the Recycler on my ICE-picks though. :D Much faster than doing the hacks by hand.

I can understand your opinion about the BOTM (not that I think the same way, I loved using all the psi hypos I had saved during the game going invisible through the entire level), but talking like that about the last level is an offense! I demand you review your opinion.

You know that place, where FreeSpace 3 is? That's pretty close compared to where Shock 3 is.

Now, if you liked Shock 2, you should read the fictions at The Divine Seed Chronicles. I tried to create a topic about that a few months ago, but it got derailed after three posts. Anyway, if you know the author of the FreeSpace chronicle, it'd be nice to let the webmaster know (it seems he's looking for the authors of all unfinished stories).

And don't think Shock 1 isn't worth playing. It may be old, and its graphics may be outdated, but it's still one of the best gaming experiences you can get. I dare to say it's easily as good as Shock 2, and probably even better. The feel you get when facing a Cortex Reaver in cyberspace for the first time is hard to find in these modern games.

Finally, I was going to post some *ahem* new screenshots, but then I realized it's still supposed to be a secret, and I've been too lazy to get any work done in the past few weeks. Anyhow, plain architecture wouldn't be that attractive... I'd better add all the lighting and objects before showing anything. :thepimp: :)

I did the same thing. I went all SUPAR PSI HAX0R in the last couple of levels. Imposed Neural Cascade, Electron Suppression and Invisibility rock. The last level was gorgeous, but I couldn't find that damned spiral staircase area to save my life.

I'm desperately searching for Shock1 locally, with the voice pack. I need it to help me complete SHODAN shrine. ;) No game has ever scared me the way System Shock 2, and I suspect Shock1 will come pretty damned close.

I should play through this one again sometime... (I have played DX, which is somewhat similar, some 16 or so times now :D)

I still need to finish Deus Ex. It has the same sort of Warren Spector brilliance to it, but the theme is less satisfying to me. System Shock 2 scares the bejeezus out of me. Deus Ex just makes me kinda nervous. Thief, on the other hand, comes very close to inducing the same kind of terror as Shock2. The emphasis on not being detected and not going balls-out run-and-gun is a big win in my book. Deus Ex doesn't actively encourage run-and-gun play, but it does absolutely nothing to discourage it.

That's kind of what I like about it actually; it does not heavily encourage or discourage anything, leaving you with the most freedom. (at the moment, heavy emphasis on stealth is preferable to the opposite mainly because it is so rare in today's games)

I cannot ever recall realy being scared by a game, although I was momentarily startled a couple times in various places. (the best example is the infamous Snipes shout in FS2's "Into the Lion's Den" :D)

I have not finished Thief 2 yet, since I am stuck on a level where I cannot figure out where to go next. I need to keep trying that...

Well, in the case of System Shock 2, it just failed to sell well when it first hit the shelves. It was a come from behind product though, as it went on to sell above initial expectations almost entirely on word-of-mouth advertising. The only problem is that by that time, Looking Glass Studios was already going under. Eidos was dumping their cash on John Romero and ION Storm for Daikatana. Thief II barely made it out the door in time.

As a result of all that, System Shock 3 is somewhere far off behind the horizon. I predict it will get released approximately six or eight years after Freespace 3. At least Volition is still around. ;)

One of the few DOS games, that I haven't got to work on my PC. For some odd reason, it doesn't recognise my sound card config. And its no fun playing without sound. :(

sblives do not like DOS based games at all - nor probably do any other of the new soundcards.

And sshock2 doesnt run on windows2000, it really is quite pathetic.

Um... Shock2 runs on Windows2k fine. Where do you think I've been playing it?

If you're having trouble RUNNING it, the problem is most likely with your setup, not Win2k or Shock2.

If you're having trouble INSTALLING it, that's just the installer's default "is it an NT box" check. Since NT4 doesn't support anything more than DX5 (and not even all of that. Most DX stuff is silently capped at 3 on NT4), many games detect NT explicitly and then refuse to install. Win2k, naturally has DX8, and thus is no problem. You'll need to force the install though, by way of a commandline option to the installer. Just open a prompt and run "setup –lgntforce", et voila! You'll be facing off against hybrids in no time. :D
