Cool RL Navy Missile Launch
A 5 second .mpeg of a missile launch...just thought it was cool. D/l from the link, although I'm not sure about its reliability as it is on my geocities server.

Download here!
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Just copy-paste it into a new window - works fine.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Small note - that missile was designed, built and paid for with the express purpose of killing people. It's not all that cool.

Yeah, I know, I need to grow up a bit and admit that new and interesting ways of blowing people up are funny as hell. Sorry, I just had a moment of feeling that people were losing perspective a bit. I hate it when that happens. Still, if starts to get to you, you can always put me on you ignore list, that seems to work quite well.

So was the Orion, and the Myrmidon, and the Hercules, and the Prometheus, and the Harbinger...

A good point, and well made. However, there is a difference between the fantasy of computer games and the real thing. When that missile falls on your house, then try making comparisons.

Cruise missiles have a purpose and they serve them well: precission strikes.  If you think war can always be avoided, you're naive; if you think weapons like the Tomahawk are bad, you're ignorant.  When you need to remove a military installation on the outskirts of a city, would you rather turn the clock back 50 years and drop indiscriminant iron bombs (probably levelling more of the city than the base) or use a missile that can hit its target 9 times out of 10 (and eliminate the base with minimal collateral casaulties)?

EDIT: stupid spelling error

Like the ones the US rained down on the Afghans back in the day? Or were they an earlier, non-precision verision?

War may well be unavoidable, but however fantastically wonderful a piece of kit the Tomahwak and its buddies may be there's no need to encourage it or (dub it 'cool').

Well, assuming the base hasn't been stuffed full of civvies, then let's go launching us some Kingpins. However, I'm confident that a single SAS operative armed with nothing more than a toothpick and Kit Kat wrapper could level the place in about twelve seconds, thus saving time and money and making us Brits look good

Well if your SAS operatives are so impressive, why aren't they over in Iraq taking out weapons factories with nothing more than toothpicks and Kit Kat wrappers?  Special Forces may be good at what they do, but its not practical to use them for anything and everything; cruise missiles, despite being millions apeice, are more cost effective.

In that case, you could say the same about anything else; why call anything "cool?" :p :D (and the hydrogen bomb is even much "cooler" ;7)

Sorry, I was compelled to post this...

Quote
"The American bombs killed no military personnel during the campaign. This bomb here," said one reporter, as she pointed to a crater nearby, "it destroyed only a Mosque full of orphans, a family of adorable kittens, and one police officer who was just one day away from retirement." I was sickened as I looked upon the twisted wreckage of what must have been one of their religious iron sculptures, which had at one time held the shape of a large anti-aircraft gun pointing skyward. "It is, uh, symbolic," said one man nearby. "It symbolized the shooting of our prayers at Allah."

I wouldn't - I've heard rumours (mostly about you and your mates taking the piss out of people who've somehow managed to annoy you in some way), so frankly I'm not going within five miles of it

Also, I'm going to assume that this will be my last post in this thread (to be honest, I don't know why it's not been locked already), so let me just say it's been fun and I'd love to do it again some time.

And you never know heretic, post a Rift link and I may click it out of morbid curiosity - I always wondered just what it was you did to people in there... might be fun :)
