Does anybody really care about TVWP?
It's got no missions? Why would I want it then?

Not to mention that with all the hype and chat about the campaign in the public forums I don`t actually see any point in playing the missions when you do finish them. I already know most of the plotline from the pimping you`ve done so I probably won`t be downloading the finished campaign unless I`m bored.

Okay, whats the storyline for the Unification War if you think you're so bright?

We talk about stuff in our private forum ten times as much as we do in the public ones.

Dude, don't take offence here, but this entire topic is just...wrong.

First off, 'Does anybody really care about TVWP', might not be the best way to get people interested in your mod. It suggests that you don't have confidence in your own work, and if you don't even have the confidence to assume people will like it, how do you expect people to want to play it, particularly considering the 13 meg download (Not massive I'll admit, but as a 56ker, it did put mee off downloading it this arvo).

Second of all, releasing your campaign without missions, no matter how unfinished it is, is no good. People are, for the most part, lazy. If we download something, we want to play it, not create more work for ourselves in FREDding missions which really wouldn't be a lot of fun to play anyway (self FREDed ones that is). Had you made the mods yourselves, you might have gotten away with releasing it as a TC pack or something, and while I don't doubt that you did put a lot of work into it, you can't avaoid the fact that you didn't make the mods, so it's not really appropriate (to my way of thinking) to release it as a TC. That's just my opinion though.

The storyline issue is a murky one here. Admittedly, you are doing a prequel, and so some of the story is fairly well known, and it's a personal descision, but, particularly the way you've released so far (sans missions), I personally believe it was a bad idea. Despite the fact that it's a game, and fun to play, the basic point behind every campaign, from :v:s to CoW (shortest one I could think of, No offense Aldo), they're about telling the story. If you release the story, nobody will feel the need to play the campaign.

Despite what I've said, people don't not want to play the TVWP, and I'm sure they care about it. However, have you considered making sure that they also know about it? Tell people! Post in your forum with a sticky topic, link to it in FS Modding, Gen FS, even Hard Light if the admins'll let you get away with it. PM Windrunner and get it on the front page. It's news, it'll get up there. Even when you have nothing to release, make fancy renders, screenshots, whatever. While I'll admit to not following the TV War Project like a bloodhound, I didn't really know about the release until I read this topic. Maybe I'm slower than others, maybe it just needed more coverage.

Finally, your website, you get a shiny gold star for function... but a gelationous grey brown mass for aesthetics. If you're using Word for webpage design, maybe it's time to get some help, and you've been offered some - take it. If you want input, work together, maybe you write the text, define the areas, whatever. But think of something to tidy the site up a bit.

So, in summary

Pimp like hell, but don't overpimp. Hard to balance, but important.
Keep at least some of the story quiet
FRED something. Even if it's just random missions to show things off (like we got with ST). Remember, you're creating something to be played - give us something to play with.

Once again, don't take this the wrong way. I've tried to avoid being as negative and impolite as several others in this thread, and what I've provided is intended as constructive criticism. Do with it what you will. Anyway, if this thread continues to degenerate, I think the hammer will descend on it, so I'll get out now.

none taken... although, to be honest, CoW is less about an original storyline and more about sheer over-the-top fun. ;)  Not to say there isn;t one (some of the dialog and events in`s pretty cool, in particular), just that there's a different focus.

Incidentally, CoW is 10 missions long now.  So it's not_that_small.

As others have said, you need to include at least one or two missions in a campaign demo release.

hehe, that is exactly the same thing with PI; mission gameplay is the main focus. :D

Didn't know that :D. I'm even more impatient now than when I thought it was 5-6 missions long :).

Well...I'm just waiting on Shadowolf getting back online so he can do some bug fixes on the missions...then we have a main beta test (public), try and get the sound recorded (might be a seperate release), then bingo!

It's almost there... unfortuantley me lone FREDer has som rL issues, so no idea when he'll be back online.  'm trying to get a very (read: stupidly) high standard of mission, though, so the wait should be worth it.  and if it isn;t, you can always play with the mods :)  The new verison of the Gauss is especially cool ;)

Good. Keep more of it there.

I think Black Wolf has put my points more eloquently than I did but I`ll add that the less I know about a campaign (apart from the names of those involved) the more likely I am to play it. I like to play a campaign with suprises in it. You`ve discussed all the ships and ship classes in your campaign so many times on this board that I`ve lost a lot of the initial intrest I had in this mod.

I tend not to go to the public forums for other campaigns not cause I`m not interested in them but because I like to know nothing about what to expect when I play them. By discussing TVWar so heavily on the main forums you`ve given away too much. This release is an even larger step in the wrong direction, completely giving away most of the mods and changes you`ve made weeks or more likely months before the missions come out.

i seem to remember voluteering to make a site a while ago, i did the one for ITHOV but i never got round to the TV-War. Here's why:

No offence guys, the idea is a great concept but i think its getting buchered. The work i've seen is all a bit shoddy. What you called a render was a bunch of ships in game engine milling about looking very ugly. And the over pimping is unbearable, i never read the TV war threads cos they r all designed like an internal forum. Get it sorted and this could be good, but if not then your gona crash and burn.

Screenshots are the way to sell a MOD to the people I reckon.

You can talk as much as you like, but pics are so much better.
This for example: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,9916.0.html

Makes me want to play that mod more than any text :thepimp: could.

I have provided a more effective way to control where and when screenshots can be taken from in order to let you guys get some shots that really show off your mods. I suggest you all make excessive use of it.

We don't pimp the main page anymore. We just got our damn hosting a few days ago.

As for you guys who think you know the storyline, I think that's funny.

If you guys don't want to download it, then that's fine. Wait until the next release, which will have missions. The Unification War will be 7-10 missions long, and the Vega Engagement is planned to be a pretty long campaign.

I agree, I personnaly download every new MOD that comes around, because I appreciate the work people put into it. I was a little under confidentm, because after so long of you guys waiting, I only got one reply to the release. And Stargunner later asks me for voice files from fs1. Does the term "Butter-up" come to mind? I just thought I'd get a little more people.:(

Anyway, Unification War demo is NOT far off. I'm also working on a few missions to go with that release. Its a small campaign, but it shows most of the new ships in action.

I'm still getting stuff sorted out after the big "Crash" (Saved all the FS data:nod: ), so I have T-W war release but plan on trying it this weekend. The only thing was the same jpeg was used 2 or 3 times. Screenshots are great for PIMPing but keep it fresh. Other than that I don't think talking about something "too much" is bad. Try it, you like it or you don't! I agree about trying to keep cool surprises secret (but it's hard! especially if your trying to do something new, you wanna tell SOMEBODY!) :sigh:
As for do I really care? Hell yes! At least the team is trying to do someting, and they have a release! (can you do better?). rant over...
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !

Oh, believe me, we CAN do better.

I got tons of great stuff. Not even released to my team yet ( Got to work out the bugs ). But until the full release two, everything will be updates for the release that I just gave out.

I agree with what these guys are saying.  Let's move ALL, story talk into the private forums for now, and only release little tid-bits.  And they're right, we did post the timeline for the whole project, so they no quite a bit.  The biggest problem is the website, which definately needs to be sexy and eligant (no offense, Hades).  I have a working version of the mod now, and the screen making code, so I'll be putting them to work, and comming up with some sweet screens that'll help show what this project is made of.  If I have time, I'll make a very short little campaign (4 missions tops) so everyone can have and idea of how it plays.  The main demo will be the UW however, so don't expect miracles from me.

That's right. :)

Every mod must stand out from the masses if it is gonna be succesful.
Have you ever been wondering how TBP got it's fame among players who have not seen single episode of B5? :)
Well anyway, every mod needs something cool thay can advertise in their screenshots. :)

I have seen far too many mods trying to advertise themselves with screenshots showing pure action, lot's of ships and effects. Not really that impressive. :(

The term "beta" may scare off some people from checking the release out, (Beta releases of programs are usually released for the express purpose of finding bugs in them, and thus it implies an incomplete, possibly unusable, product.) others the lack of missions, and for some the web page bugs as well as the need to download those "fixes." The download link on the site posted in the thread isn't very obvious either. As for that problem with the URL's for the files, you either need to put:
Code: [Select]
http:// before the www to keep it from using referenced links or remove all the extra stuff so that it looks like:
Code: [Select]
href="datatvwp.zip"
(Referenced links are what you are getting that causes the doubled path.)
And get rid of that lights background texture on the main page. Makes it hard to read any of the text. The downloads page looks better, but you need a nice big button that says Download. :)

For me, I haven't gotten it yet but 13 megs via 56k for a mission less MOD isn't worth it yet. I'll wait till there are missions. (I'm not a big MOD downloader in any event, only MOD I've used much is the Robotech MOD and I've been doing editing more then playing with it. :) )

Don't worry. The Unification War will not disapoint anybody, and it will be in its own download.
