Right..well, I've decided I need to brush up on me Java skills - wot with not having used it since last April (if you ever saw me working on routegraph.java, you'd know why...) - but sod knows what I'm actually going to make.

so, anyone got any ideas for a little app?  I can't do graphics yet  - that's next semester (with 3d texture maps and learning to do phong shading - wohoo!) - bt I can do a bunch of crap regardless (various data structures, parsing files in/out, windowed GUI stuff, graphs (erc) and some other crap I can't think of off hand.

start out by doing a web poll, that should be fairly easy...

Not javascript - Java.  No web stuff, just proper programs.  i did start doing some specs for a custom tbl builder program, but realised it was pretty redundant (cut and paste?).

How about a really simple app that will display CPU temp, system temp, and CPU fan RPM? I know there are others out there, but what the heck. :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Good one....... not sure if it's possible (cos of the JVM abstraction layer) - but I'll have a quick look through the libararies to see if physical hardware can be accessed........

I was just discussing TBL programs with someone the other day. I think it would be a great idea. Yes, it would be a bunch of cut and paste, but you could also take it a lot farther. You could setup sanity checking on values, template/toolkits for building specialised weapons from generalised ones, etc.

Of course, I'd probably build something like that to get a grasp of how the FS2 TBLs work. :D
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

I just couldn't really see a benefit from it...

NB:  You can't directly access CPu stats form Java, but you can access a dll that does that for you.  i found a neat little site saying how to do this :)

Some time ago I spent some fifteen minutes writing a TBL "cleaner" in java. Input is a table file, output is the table file clean of comments and superfluous blank lines and spaces, properly idented (sp?). Can't find the damn thing now, tho. :p :D
Probably away. Contact through email.

That's sWiSH, not Flash...

it's a difference... it's like CoffeeCup Firestarter (which makes custom Flash movies, exported as SWF files).  it's not the same thing
