158th Weapon Models WIP
Narol has me working on some high poly weapon models for use in Loadout animations. I figured I'd show the first two here. I'm looking for constructive criticism and commentary. First the Penetrator MK1, followed by the Penetrator Mk2. Really, its mostly the same model, but here you go:

Mk1:

those look prety damn good, only thing I'd sugest is make them a bit shinier and a bit more variety of color

Thanks, Bobboau. :D

I'm only doing the meshwork, not the texturing, etc. Narol's got someone else who will take care of that. I might play about with the surface controls to get something interesting going on the next several, though.

ACK. Its killing me. I've only just posted them and I'm already seeing stuff where I REALLY need to fix some stuff. I might update these tomorrow with some mesh fixes. *heh* Way to much time spent staring at 3d geometry.

Well the Mk2 version is pretty much complete. Though its hard to tell, there's an actual keyboard modelled into the shelf on the port side of the weapon. The inscription on the other side says "CEP-M125B". The Mk1 version has the inscripton "CEP-M125A"

[edit]
And the Mk1 version is complete now. :D
[/edit]

On to other weapons, including the multi-barrel .50 calibre cannon (just for Sandwich). :D
Comments? Opinions?

Didn't notice the update.

How would it be possible to make the chrome barrels closer to the inner black ones?

I made - started (read tried) on a weapon similar (a hi-poly ver.)to something Aldo posted (in Reci. forum). Wasn't to similar to his, though. :sigh:

I could, but I'm trying to make them look... I dunno... showy? Like what a weapons vendor would put on a stand at a military hardware exposition. They would never FIRE such a weapon of course. I've got a nice procedural camouflage material that I'm going to use for the main body, with an matte olive drab for the brightwork for "battle" versions.

Since you've tried doing stuff like this before, do you have any hints (for the modelling side)?

Yours are lightyears ahead of my attempt.
I used the same method (I'm guessing here) you do. Creative use of primitives, Booleans, shapemerges, extrusions, bevels, scaling etc.

Actually, what I started with was a bunch of generalised parts. Narol gave me a bunch of weapon ANIs to look at and I noticed that most of the volition weapons are built using a building block approach. There's stock parts that are customized for each model.

I'm doing that, plus careful booleans (thank goodness LW booleans WORK cleanly) and some... er cheating.

The cheating involves looking throught the stock models that came on my Lightwave CD and using bits from them. The multibarrel .50 cal I'm working on is built along the same lines as the machine gun from the Hummer model, for example. In other cases, I took the face of the calculator and the keyboard from the notebook computer and messed with them a bit to make them suitable for use as detailing.

I can't express how good it feels to not have to worry about polycount for a while. :D

Does anyone else do this sort of stuff?
