Although I've pestered KillMeNow about this many many times ( ) I got this new inspiration by seeing mikhael's new mjolnir

Now, it seems there are a lot of people who are using Lightwave at HLP now, and are actually particularly good at using it in specific areas.

Now, for my idea: I'd like to suggest that the lightwave users of this community join together in a project to develop high-poly versions of FS2 ships(not every one, as some are almost never used). I think this would be very benefitial to the community here, as most of the people who are producing graphics here use Lightwave.

Also, Lightwave models are easily converted into 3ds or max files, so it would be pretty easy for Max users to import the models as well; though the reverse(Max-->LWO) is usually very difficult(ever try converting an extremely-high poly Trek ship from Max to Lightwave? Loses half the information!)

If other people would decide to join the project, I'm sure I could persuade KillMeNow to help out every once in awhile, he's pretty good at modelling and procedural texturing(he can make textures too, but I'm not sure how well though)

No I mean this solely for the purpose for renderings, not to put this into the game, so poly counts could go REALLY high...

Lemme tell you: doing a High Poly Herc Mk1 is kicking my ass.

I'd love to see more LW format high poly Freespace models.

better yet, make them reasonable enough to be added in-game as a uber-detailed LOD for those with the horsepower to back them up (whit a little help from the SCP people)

Imagine, bump-mapped Orion, with specular highlighting, bump mapping, and stuff. mmm.... yummy!

If you're doing all that, extra geometry would be just that: extra. The whole point of bump mapping, for example, is to cover up the fact that you're using flat polys to represent "bumpy" surfaces. ;)

Ooh, aren't we special, with our fancy-pants programs that cost a bajillion dollars and don't require any work to model in. I suppse you're better than us people who actually have skill because you're so rich and never have to work for a render and have all the effects, huh? Well, let me tell you something. Ray Dream beats MAX hands-down, and Carrara can do some things Lightwave never could. All it takes is a few extra hours of rendering. So. There.:p

Down Stryke! Down! Bad troll, bad!

That Mjolnir model was done entirely using standard tools available in every serious 3d package out there. It started with primitives, uses some extrudes and booleans, point welds, and object duplication. No special tools were used. I'm too lazy to learn them. It could have been done in Truespace1, Ray Dream, Animation Master and probably even Wings3d. There's about 16hrs of hard work dedicated to modelling that thing, and another 10min or so for setting up the render.

I know, he makes no sense...

First he goes off saying that Lightwave is all-expensive and pro etc and that it takes no work to model in it. And then he says he has other things that are better... :wtf:

Sometimes I want to smack people upside the head... :ha:
