The Ghost and the Darkness - storyline
Ok, I've decided to release the storyline in 3 bite sized morsels (so my connection doesn't time out when typing   )

First off, the Prologue.  Set at the death of Capella, it would have lasted 4/5 missions and been released as a teaser.  It was abandoned because I didn't want to spoil the appearance of the Diablo for the main campaign.

Nevertheless, it would have been summarised at some point in the main campaign, possibly in a cutscene.

PROLOGUE:  CAPELLAS ASHES

As the Sathanas flet surrounds Capella, frant evacuation efforts continue.  One Sathanas breaks free of the rest, apparently heading towards the Vega node.

Realising the massive damage the Sath could do to the Capella refugee transports, and to Vega, the GTVa scrambles a rag-tag fleet to stop the Sathanas (attacking from behind, sensibly).

At massive losses, they suceed.  But as they celebrate, a massive, new ship, the Diablo (4 km-ish), warps in and quickly tears the fleet to shreds.  It immediately warps out, literally minutes after.

Meanwhile, near the Vega node, the GTC Tarzus (Leviathan) has been transferring the sit-reps to command from the fleet.  Intercepting the fleets last transmissions, the Tarzus enters the node mere seconds before it is to be destroyed.

Unfortunately, the supernova, and the collapse of the node, have a massive impact, throwing the Tarzus out thousands of miles from the outskirts of Vega.  The only witness to the Diablo is too far from home, and crippled.

At the same time, the Diablo had been travelling inter-system with it's jump drives.  Hyper-senstive to the effects of sub-space, the collapse of the Capella nodes badly damages the Diablo.  it crawls out of subspace, to a nebula on the outskirts of vega, where it can use the gas within to slowly repair itself.

(NOTES)

The Diablo is a semi-bio-organic ship (much like the Shivan race), so it can use nebula gas to convet to enrgy, and distribute to it's hull to 'heal' itself.  It's subspace jump reactors are too badly damaged for it to summon help (see later), or travel at this point.

i think that this idea was used in some form by Derelict, but I've never played that, so I can say it was intended to be original

The Ghost and the Darkness - storyline
(phew... here goes again)

EPISODE 1: THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS

The gTVa has survived 25 years of instability since the loss of Capella.  Numerous border uprisings and rebellions have been quelled.  Only one faciton, the Sons of Capella, remains.  They have been forced back into the Ikeya system (some smaller elements have fled to border systems, mainly Vega).  the GTVa now prepare to destroy the SCf once and for all...  (and does - the last mission in this 'bit' was a big assualt on the SCf command Arcadia).

......

With the SCF reduced to guerilla attacks on small convoys, the GTVA is victorious.  Meanwhile, in Vega, the gTVa is launching subspace 'hopper' probes to investigate the outer reaches of the Vega system, and hopefully better assess the state of Capella.

One of these probes comes across the derelict GTC Tarzus, floating in space (now closer to the Vega system, natch).  The GTSC Pascal (Faustus) is asiogned to scan it, and reports back it's findings, which are immediately classified  .

Meanwhile, contact has been lost with a small (Valhalla) class research station in the Vega nebula.  The player has to investigate the station.  Batlling off the rogu SCf pilots who have fled to the nebula, the scout party finds the station crumpling and about to explode.  The station commander manages to send out a few babbling messages before dying....

[SOC]
Command decides there must be a small SCP cruiser / corvette in the nebula... instead they encounter the SSD Diablo.  The first scout party is incenerated, but the player (hopefully) protects the escape pods with the command crew.

The follwing missions see the SOC desperately trying to halt the Diablo (and gaining further intel through daring scouting missions   ) before it reaches inhabited areas and panic ensues.

Needless to say, nae luck.
[/soc]

With the diablo in the Vega system, chaos ensues.  The player escorts supply convoys away from installtions/  planets as the Diablo incenerates them.  worse still, the Diablo is capable of summoning other capital ships from subspace, using its massive ULTRA BFRed beam to disrupt gravity fields and creat subspace rifts.

In one mission set, the GTCa Warlock comes under heavy attack.  Escorted by the player, the Warlock suffers havy damage but survives.  in the following mission, it encounters the Diablo.  The player has to fly a small transport (GTT Kyoto) from the crippled carrier (containing the command crew0, and evade Shivna persuit until they reach the safety of an asteroid field (where support arrvies to help).

The heavily demoralised gTVa is facing armagheddon.... attempts to destroy the Diablo in subspace fail, as it can't disrupt tracking sensors.

But the OSC discovers the Diablo's shields can be disabled by successive eMP pulses.  The gTVa forces the Diablo into an eMP nebula (to repair itself) through successive attacks.  In the second last mission, the player leads a wing of Gagana / Scimitar bombers on an attack on the Diablos critical systmes in the EMP nebula.  Using the new Helios dumbfire (remote detonate - no lock in nebs), the player must try and destroy the Diablos shield generators and, if possible, the reactors and main beam turret.

Fianlly, the Diablo is lured from the nebula for a final attack buy the ramins of the GTVA fleet.  Depending on the number of suviving reactors, the Diablo summons help of varoius sizes (cain to Ravana size).

This is the last stand, now or never....

(end of episode 1)
(notes)

Last mision / missions against the Diablo were a problem, as it's hard to ensure player interaction against a shield protected capship.

Also, the Diablo never regains full strength, so it can never reach the stage of being able to travel inter system without a node... this allows for some confrontations.

Finally, the Diablo has a massive beam weapon for one reason - to make it hard for other capships to destroy it.  As beams pass through shields, thast advantage is lost against ships the size of the Warlock, the the ULTRA bFRed is used to give the Diablo the advantage.  Plus it looks damn cool.

EPISODE 2: PARADIGM SIHFT

It is now 10 years after the encounter with the Diablo.  Intel from the super-destroyer has allowed the GTVa to learn how to open more unstable nodes, implement Knossos type devices, and also how to restrict the fomraiton of subspace 'rifts' with an artificial gravity field.

All GTVa systems have special Knossos-type devices, which hold open exisitng nopdes whilst blocking the formation of others.  this, it is hoped, will prevent the return of anotre Diablo class craft.

In additon, the GTVA have built a new juggernaut, the GTVA Messiah (?).  The 4 huge matrix cannons on it can not only be used to block the formation of any subspace node, but also to create a feedback loop in the tunnel, effectively stretching the target craft over millions of miles.  this tech is largely based on the SSd Diablo and Knosso device.

Finally, despite resitiance from Vasudan pro-democracy rebels (gotta have some in-fightin   ) a Knossos device is built in Delta Serpentis for Sol.  The Messiah is sent home...

only to find a barren system.  Filled with rubble, and shivan cruiser / fighters, Sol has been obliterated.  After clearing out the Shivans, the Messiah discovers (esape posd / derelict Arcadia station) that another Diablo class craft entered Sol to finish off what the Lucifer had done.  Even worse, it had been only months ago.... Earth had died while the GTVA had been arguing over who best to command the new super-ship.

Sworn for revenge, the gTVa sends it's fleet back into the maelstrom - into Capella.  Intending to capture back the former colony systems, the GTVA wants to both establish a blockhead (right word?) against the Shivans, and to take the war back on the offensive.

unfortunately, they never bargain for the Shivan planet killer  ...... the rest of the sotry has to be finished form here on, but suffice to say, some planets do blow up, and it almost ends in tears.

And that was the story for the campaign.

Pretty good, I think.

The Ghost and the Darkness - storyline
Well, it is one awesome storyline... Or should I was.   I guess some fine tuning might have been nice, but overall wow! It's a shame that it couldn't be finished... But then again, where was I when I could have helped? Sigh...
Long time ago, you see, there was this thing called the VBB and... oh, nevermind.

Further background info
This was to be inserted into the techroom
Reconstruction

Following the destruction of Capella, the GTVa spent much of the following 20 years in turmoil.  several major border revolts broke out, and several outlying systems seceeded from the GTVA.  The Primus Termillion revolt, led by a fanatic Aims Termillion, was the first major rebellion.  Similar to the NTF rebellion in scale, the PT aimed to destroy all spacefaring craft in order that the Shivans would no longer see the GTVA as a threat.  Following 5 years of turmoil, the rebllion was crushed, but the weakening of the GTVa was now ever-cleare.

As a result, Vasudan Emperor Khonsu III initiated a massive rebuilding programme.  Conscription was introduced to build up the militaril (which had been dwindling since Capella), and a massive rebuilding programme was started.  In addition, control of the GTA / GVA fleets was merged into a single body, and officer exchange programmes massively increased.

This helped stabilise the GTVA, encouraging inter-racial relations and also helping employ thousands of the Capellan refugees.  At present, the only substancial threat to stability is from the SCP, and command anticipates a total victory in weeks rather than months.

Sons of Capella (SCP)

The destruction of Capella left over 2 million refugees roaming the stars.  Political instability made many worlds reluctant to take on further occupants.

"We are a ghost of a people, destined to roam the stars seeking for a new home, yet never forgetting our own and what it became"

This led to the formation of the Capellan Voice, a powerful political body pressing for more change within the GTVA.  Although the 2 million refugees were only a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of the population, they held over 50% of the GTVAs freighters and transports.  Thus, the GTVA or rarely ignored their requests.

30 years on, and most of the original refugees are dead.  Their descendants now regard the GTVA as an enemy.  Clouded by time, they blame the GTVA for not destroying the Gamma Draconis  - Capella node properly, and allowing the Shivan fleet to pass through.

When the GTVA introduced conscription, many of the younger members of the Capellan Voice took up arms against the GTVa, and formed the Sons of Capella.  Smaller than both the NTf and the later Primus Termillion rebllions, the SCP presented a formidable force nonetheless.

Hwoever, the GTVAs technological superitority has been vital in reducing the SCP to guerilla tactics and defending Ikeya, the only system they still control.

The Ghost and the Darkness - storyline
Episode one was good.  Lots of innovative uses of FRED, with a decent story and a god like ship.

Episode two however. . .  I have never liked the idea that the Shivans find a way to Sol.  Even if it does fit with your story (which it does), the idea has never sat very well with me.

Damn, if you're posting a campaign summary like this, maybe I should post "Blood and Guts" and "Legacy of Time," the advanced versions.

I guess the whole intention was to create an idea of desperation... a sort of very dark, very sober war-is-hell type thing.

Episdoe 2 was a more logical progression of this theme (albeit not fully figured out, and was probably far more original in concept (as far as technology and battle tactics goes) than the first part.

I realised that, if the existance of a ship like the Messiah, and the Knossos technolgy was used, Sol would obviously have been visited.  so i felt that, given the 70-odd year gap since it was isolated, Sol would not present any significant Technological benefit / threat to the GTVA..plus it gave a good reason for going on a campaign for vengeance in Shivan space.

i actually had a good idea of what to do for the Sol system - new backgrounds of burning planets, asteroid / debris fields, and derelict Orions / Arcadias.....possibly a Sol nova, which destoryed all the planets before Jupiter, and a white dwarf left over.

The socond Ep only had a faily brief concept outline, but the first part had all 20-odd misisons planne dout, if not started.

It was need to make a shedload of new ships that really screwed up the campaign.... i had roughly 20 planned, including natty little rebel fighters destroyed as asteroids, a Shivan planetkiller, a big-***  fleet HQ (whichc i may re-use), a Terran node gate, and some other cool stuff.
