If ever there was a bad idea worse than FF-X2, I've never heard it. ever heard of Secret of Evermore?
Shame about Square. They used to be so good. Here's hoping Enix gets rid of the morons who thought X2 was a good idea, and keeps the ones who thought World Runner and FF-VI were good ideas.
Though I won't know 'til I've played it, I think that the deliberate open-endedness at the end of FFX is supposed to point at a sequel so I think it'll fit. (That is, I don't think it's a quick bastardization of the FFX story/game just for quick bucks. FFX was probably designed to accomodate a sequel. Of course they coud've made it more open-ended...)
But it is true that the FF games are meant to be quite final in ending.
I'm kinda shocked at the Enix-Square merge though... FF and DQ (both flagship series) aren't very matching and developement with both themes would go screwy
