OK, so... I finally start to put stuff in to the campaign editor, and this is what happens when I click on the ready room in FS2:

Error: Argument count is illegal.

In sexpression: ( cond )
(Error appears to be: cond)
File:C:\projects\freespace2\code\Mission\MissionParse.cpp
Line: 3552

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, does this lot actually mean anything, or is it just a random, pointless crash? I mean, the mission will run fine if I hit OK, but frankly I don't want the player to have to click away error messages when they begin a game

DG sometimes I wonder What on Earth Are You Doing? FREDding isn`t this hard :)

How on earth have you gotten a campaign file to crash? There's only about 3 or 4 things you need to do to make a campaign file.

Oh, I hate this one. This usually means that you have exceeded that blasted sexp limit; I have had more trouble with this than all the other errors combined. The "cond" thing seems to point to the campaign file, but I have never had any problems with those before. They are quick and easy to build though, so just try remaking the file.

:wtf:

Exceeding the SEXP limit? But surely that would cause FRED to say something... well, like karajorma says, what do I know :D

I've tried rebuilding the campaign file a few times... it seems like this specific mission is causing the problem...

OK then kara, try this one for weirdness. I had a mission which suddenly stoppped working (not the one in the other thread, this is a different one :)). Anyways, I worked out what was causing the crash - the mission had two Argos which you have to protect, and it seems that when I made a debrief stage, goal or anything else like that which was triggered by BOTH transports departing, then it crashed. It was fine with just one transport, and it didn't matter which one - I just couldn't have both together. Even if I made a seperate SEXP for each departure, a debrief stage calling for both indivdual SEXPs would crash. It wasn't even the SEXP limit playing up, since I'm now using two rather cunning SEXPs to sidestep the problem caused by just the one... so anyway, this mission is the first'n in the campaign, so I feel I should fix it before I move on :)

[EDIT] Oh, and that error message was all that pasted out of the clipboard. There wasn't any more :)

So do you get the same error when trying the mission alone from the tech room? If so, then it is probably the sexp limit.

FRED2 loads these missions with too many sexps perfectly fine; the game is also capable of doing so (since it lets you go into that "debug mode" thing), but it still insists on giving that stupid error. This is by far the most annoying problem for mission designers, since it is not even something that can be narrowed down; you just have to simplify or get rid of some stuff. :p

See? This is the sort of thing I mean DG :) Why do your missions seem to go wrong in strange inexplicable ways?

I`ve never had a bug in one of my missions I couldn`t track down eventually. Sometimes it took me a while to figure them out but it's not happened yet (touch wood it won`t).

Yet you seem to be getting weird errors and crashes all the time. As far as I can see you aren`t actually doing anything wrong so I`m putting my money on the fact that your computer has an evil gremlin sitting in it somewhere making your missions crash at the same point in an attempt to drive you mad. :)

It's pretty annoying actually cause I'm looking forwards to reci

BTW DG I wasn`t saying anything about your FREDding skills. I haven`t played any of your missions so I can`t comment on that. :) It just seems that you pose about half of all the FRED questions on this board and they are related to strange crashes or mission errors.

:D

It's 'cos I push the envelope, ya know

I shall experiment with dropping a few SEXPs possibly...

[EDIt] I took the side of me case off, and no gremlin. Any more ideas?

I should have told you in a letter. He's inside your computer remember? He read my posting before it appears on your screen and hid. :) (and you thought that delay between clicking on a link and the page coming up was for it to be sent over the internet to your computer! :D )

Hmm... then logic dictates that I should turn on the liquid nitrogen cooling system and freeze the little bugger out of there

No, FREDing isn't hard, but it's not a walk trough the park either.

There is a mission I'm making that just doesn't work right!

You are on the patrol in the nebula (emp). There is a large ship approx. 5000m ahead, and alltough I set the range to 2000m, I can still target him???
Allso, a conversation doesn't want to start after I san a subsys.

Hey, anyone out there willing to check it out?
I'll send it to him.
NOTE (weapons used as primarys can be downloaded from my site - otherwise, change the loadout).

My first thought is that the offending ship is set to friendly IFF. Either that, or you have a Charybdis or Setekh somewhere :)
