No *.vp yet, but I think I've got all the bugs worked out (you don't die ten seconds after starting the mission anyway...)

Here's some screenies of the DATA files hack-job I've been doing...

This pretty much defines the phrase 'bad day' if you're in the Chinese Airforce.  (Yes, the gatling cannon on the F-44 really does spew out over 30 rounds per SECOND).

"So long..., fairwell..., Adu, Ald'vetasein..." (Missile hits are pretty much fatal in Starfighter.  Even a near miss can cause crippling injury to a fighter).

"Tally-HO!!!"  This is the preffered direction to approach type-37s from.

Here's a quick snapshot I got of a bunch of A-36 torpedo bombers lining up for an attack run against a chinese light guided-missile cruiser.

"Packing HEAT!"  The Chinese fighters use a 37mm chaingun with a poor (well, poor for this mod anyway) rate of fire.  However they're twin-mounted and pack a whole-lotta hurtin per bullet.  OUCH!

Time for this pilot to re-evaluate his career options... ("paper-weight..., fertilizer..., inert object..., hmmm, so many to chose from...")

I told you I'd get a pic of the Chinese missile cruiser up.  Took this one three seconds before that missile battery lobbed one straight into my nose.

I hope to have the *.vp file posted on the website by the end of the week.  Finally, an FS2 version of my TC will be available.

Finally got the sketches back for the ship skins (well, some of them anyway).  I think that'll be my next priority is to at least get the fighters textured.

lol, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't based on it.  It is a different model (longer, sleeker, and a different turret arrangement), but it definately was influenced by the overall shape of the Fenris.

Looks like you choped the ends off, stuck in a strut then reatached the ends, not that it looks bad, in fact it looks like Black ACE! -cool! (ha)

You need to get them textuered and then you need a REALLY! BIG! SHIP!!!! !! !. and put a wing of 4 fighters up against it!! - every one does it!!!

lol, The biggest warship in the game is the American Heavy carrier (1.6 km long, pretty small by Freespace standards).  The biggest SHIP in the game is the Chinese cargo galleon (the solar sail will be over 2.5km in diameter).

Putting only 4 fighters against ANY seriously armed ship in this game is suicide.  Without shields you're pretty much forced to use gang-bang tactics (it's still fun tho, maybe more so as you just can't get sloppy with your flying.  It also introduces some RTS elements as you almost have to coordinate parts of the battle yourself, that 'C' key will get used like never before!)

We'r working on textures now.  I just got some of the concept drawings back for the ship skins & they look good.  We've based the paint schemes for the NATO fighters off of Veitnam era carrier aircraft schemes.  The Chinese fighters are gong to be based off of modern day Chinese air-force paint schemes.  The whole look should produce a fairly familliar atmosphere that the player can identify with (heck, once they're done the command briefs are going to be brought to you courtest of CNN!   )

This is going to be a long one (2+ pages) so bare with me.  I'm on my lunch break from work right now so this might get done in 2 parts.

Here's the background story, I'm not going to give out any campaign stuff (if I did that there wouldn't be any reason to playthe game   , besides, we're still working on it...)

In the 2040s and 2050s the so-called "Third world" and "Developing" nations were catching up with the Developed ones in industrial capacity.  Fueling this growth was oil, other hydrocarbons, and nuclear (fission) energy.  Unfortunately, demand was rapidly outstripping demand and by the end of the '50s there were crippling shortages.  A number of wars fought in the '60s came to be collectively known as the 'Energy wars' as failing economies desparately fought each other for dwindling energy sources (gas, oil, uranium, even running water and coal were fought over).  By 2068, stable nuclear fusion was becoming a reality.  The first successful reactor was built in Moscow, Russia on September 6th, 2069, with several onther plants being completed in the western world mere months later.  Unfortunately, instead of being the 'unlimited energy source' that it had always been touted as being, the only known methodes required relatively rare isotopes.  Although immediate crisis had been averted, even the most optimistic estamits held that this new source would be depleated within 20 years.
Worldwide tensions ran high throughout the 70s until it was realized that these isotopes could be easily manufactured by bombarding the base elements with short wavelength (UV and shorter) radiation.  The NATO countries, Russia, India, even China to a limited degree began constructing orbital "fuel refineries" to take advantage of the solar radiation to manufacture these materials.  Unfortunately the process was slow and fairly expensive, but it slowed the depletion of fuel reserves long enough for a bolder plan to be put into action.
In 2078, fuel contractors from the British Isles and Norway forwarded a plan to establish prospecting camps on Mars to check to see if these isotopes could occur relatively naturally from long-term exposure to solar radiation.  The plan was approved and funded (largely from the EC and the US, but also by Russia, India, China, and several African and Southern American countries).  The launch and travel vehicles were provided by America and the EC and by the end of the '70s mars had over a dozen colonies and camps establised on its surface.

These camps paid off more than could have been dreamed possible.  Not only were such materials present, but present in such quantities that mining them would be far cheaper and lucrative than manufacturing them ever had been.  And these figures included supporting the colonies and transporting the material home...

Time's up, I'll finish when I get home.

Ughh... I'm tired, I almost decided to wait until morning to finish this.  But since this is midday for snadwich and several others I decided to stay up and finish it now.

By 2082, China began seriously developing its deep space and outer planets exploration programs.  It had been postulated that if these isotopes existed in quantity in the outer planets then transportation of these materials would actually be far cheaper than transporting them from Mars.  The trouble with transporting the material from Mars was two-fold.  First off, the gravity well of mars (roughly half to two-thirds that of Earth) meant that it was expensive to blast these materials off of the surface and into orbit.  The second problem was that the window for traffic between the two planets was relatively short (three to four months each year) which meant that the materials spent months stockpiled before they could be moved to earth for sale.  From a position in the outer planets, it would be possible to make deliveries year-round so a steady stream could be generated ONCE the shipping route had been set up.  Also, the moons and asteroids of the outer planets offer far less gravitational ressistance for launching payloads, further reducing costs.  The west had ignored such plans because it would take over a decade for any of it to pay-off (most investors would balk at such a long-term payoff).  China, with its socialistic economy didn't mind waiting for what was sure to be even greater rewards.

All during the '80s and into the '90s, China launched a series of (relatively) large craft of various sorts with the intent of claiming Jovian space and its sattilites.  Smaller craft equipped with fairly conventional plasma-drive engines flew through the solar system to Jupiter's moons and set up the required mining stations.  Later, a series of huge craft equipped with solar sails were launched to create the required shipping route.  By the time the first of these galleons reached Jupiter space, a sizable stock of ore had been produced.  This was then loaded into bulk cargo containers and drug out to the galleons by the smaller ships (by this time they were being called 'Cruisers' by thier crews).  Once loaded, the galleons would reverse its sails, gently slow its orbit, and 'fall' back into Earth space where it would unload and then repeat the process after a quick refitting.  By the end of the 21st century, Chinese fuels were flooding the markets and threatening to drive most western fuel companies out of business.

By the 22nd, every effort was being made by the west to reduce the cost of manufacturing fuels.  In 2107, a large number of companies banded together and settled on a project that they hoped would reduce the cost of maintaining thier martian colonies.  A huge portion of the cost was in shipping goods too the colonies for thier support (most of that was in escaping Earth's gravity well).  If a cheaper way of putting material into orbit could be found it would slash their cost of operating tremendously.  The solution they settled on was to move portions of their manufacturing and food production to lunar bases where they could then be shot into orbit using a super-long railgun.  Over the next four years, Tranquility base was constructed, staffed, and made fully operational.  After several false starts, a plan was finally settled on for the railgun that would be used to launch payloads (now known as the Super-lift project).  This device consisted of a slowly elevating track 37km in length laid out across the Sea of Tranquility.  This device was capable of lifting over 1000 tons into orbit in a single firing for a cost less than one-tenth that of a conventional launch vehicle from Earth.  The project was completed in 2117 and it was a complete success.  Costs of production fell and the West's companies could compete once again with asian markets.  By 2122, plans were being made for two more lunar super-lifts as well as a martian one.  The American Cydonia base (mars) was selected as the next super-lift site and construction began in 2126.

While tensions relaxed in the West with the completion of the super-lift project, they more than redoubled in the east.  It was quickly realised that if that supergun were to fire a rock at earth, it could cause massive destruction in no time at all, and there would be no way to counter it.  Although they knew the West wasn't into despotism, they had also observed that they would use their military might and all its arsenals to intervene in any conflict that arose.  For the first time in almost two centuries, China feared for its existance and sovernty as a nation...

Rather than publicly denouncing the project for fear that they would alert the West to the potential nature of the superlift (it was still in corporate hands after all), China decided on a dangerous plan of action to be implimented in two phases.  First, they created a crash program to develope its own superlift guns (in the end two were built, one in the greek camp asteroids and one in the trojan camp asteroids), in addition they also developed a spaceborne navy using their existing cruiser fleet.  Once this was done, they needed to make a demonstration of Chinese power in such a way that there could be no possible question in the minds of western leaders as to China's concerns and thier capabilities...

On August 2nd 2133, a sixty-ton boulder fell from the martian sky and completely leveled Cydonia base.  Thirty minutes afterwards, about a dozen Cruisers enterdd orbit and opened fire on parked frieghters and other orbital facilities.  The Cruiser attack was mercifully short (about 15 minutes, its only intent was soley to show the existance of such a fleet AND to demonstrate its power with even such a small number of ships) but when all was done with, casualties from both attacks were estimated at over half-a-million dead or missing...

(I'm sorry everyone, my carpal-tunnel is killing me, I have to quit for now.  Part three will commence tommorrow, see ya then.)

Freespace *2* version of MOD
Here's the third and final part to our story.  Hope it hasn't been too long of a read

  One hour after the attack, with western leadership still reeling, China issued its statement along with a set of demands;

"...In obvious violation of the space disarmament act, the west has proceeded to develope a series of superguns whose ultimate purpose could only be to hold the rest of the planet hostage and enforce western will on all of us.

The attack on mars was simply a demonstration of eastern power, capability, and determination.  We posses the ability to match western firepower, we sill not be slaves to thier whims.

  In the interest of maintaining balance of power, and the avoidance of a new arms race we make the following demands;

- No new superlift guns may be constructed, by either side. To enforce this, we have a fleet of ships capable of detecting and destroying any offending installation.

- No payload may be launched outside of lunar orbit.  Any attempt to do so will be considered an act of war and we will retaliate against the offending installation.

..."

Dumbfounded, western leaders finally realised what they truely had, and it was useless to them (the targeting data simply didn't exist for accurate bombardment).  Additionally, although it was three times as powerful as the chinese guns, it couldn't be used to fire back at the chinese guns (thier locations weren't even known at this time).

Anticipating a possible raid against Tranquility base, American and European Community officials scrambled to find some possible defense.  Although most countries possesed various pet projects, all of these were designed for small-scale and counter-insurgancy work.  The had nothing that could stand up to large scale conflicts such as this.  Fortunately, several contractors began working on designs almost as soon news of the attack reached earth (anticipating the west's need).  Boeing's design for a heavy bomber (essentially a converted cargo shuttle) carrying a series of nuclear-tipped missiles.  Although these were purchased at what was truely an excorbant cost (over 200 billion per unit) they were not only the most cost-effective way of dealing with the cruisers used by the chinese fleet, but could be built fast enough to be in place before any possible incursion into lunar space (it was at least a three-month trip from mars to earth space).

Issueing a warning to Chinese officials to steer clear of lunar space as protected by sovern claims laid on the moon by the United States in 1969.  Ignoring such claims as unenforcable by western powers, China's fleet forced thier way into Lunar orbit on November 23rd, 2133 and met stiff ressistance by the American bomber fleet (including prototypes, over 20 craft had been completed by this time, including traineed crews).  The battle raged for nearly 12 hours and in the end the chinese fleet was forced to retire, having lost nearly half of its ships and the rest were nearly crippled.  Two more of these injured ships were lost on the trip back to Jupiter space putting chinese losses at 9 ships lost, 390 dead, and 120 wounded.  The American bomber fleet fared little better, only nine of the origional 21 bombers remained and of those only four were operational.

With the end of the "Battle of Tranquility Sea", the political situation degenerated into a cold-war and arms race.  China developed its Interceptors to counter the threat posed by western bombers, the west countered with space superiority craft to defend the bombers, as well as a carrier fleet to give their bomber fleet an offensive capability.  Both sides continued to refine their ship designs in an endless race to gain an edge over one another.

By 2177, China began placing political stress on both Russia and India to join their international community (up to this point both nations had maintained a sort of nuetrality) to tip the balance of power in thier favor.  Sensative to such developements (there was no way the west was going to scede half the world's population to thier adversary) the cold war began to turn hot with orbital conflicts rising and even a few incusions of ground troops on earth taking place.  This brings us to the beginning of the game in March 2179 with the player being stationed on board the USS Ranger and the 17th strike group.  Politics on earth have reached a boiling point and the spector of war looms very close to the horizon.

THERE! that's the story up to this point.  Hope you enjoyed it *gasp*  *gasp*, now if you'll excuse me, I need to go ice my wrist...

"It's all terra firma baby!"

No BEMs (Bug Eyed Monsters) in this one, it's all about the political intrigues between the nations of Earth.

When the project is completed we will have two campaigns (one western and one eastern) so you can see the coin from both sides...  I'm trying very hard to make both sides very beleivable and avoid the 'evil empire' syndrom (unfortunately, I'm not very good at this and the Chinese do come off a bit as the 'bad-guys' don't they...)

LOL!

EDIT: Excellent read, by the way. The only hole I could find in the whole thing was the Chinese galleons sailing back and forth to Jupiter being cheaper then the bases on Mars and the Moon. The distance itself would make any trips last for years at the least. (I think...)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

True, the voyages do last several years for a single craft (china built a whole fleet of these over a twenty-year period however) but the chief advantage is the fact that asian commodity agents receive shipments year round, while their western counterparts only recieve shipments for one quarter of the year.  This basically allows China to flood the market year round as well as respond more efficiently to spike demands and unforseen circumstance.

Another thing to remember is when talking about orbital mechanics, it's all about energy states (an arena where you always want the high-ground as any fighter pilot can tell you).  Jupiter occupies a farther orbit tahn Mars, thus it (and anything around it) can be said to have a higher state of energy.  I'm not certain exactly how this part of the argument worked, I'll have to get back to you on it but I'm certain that it was important.

But remember, it took China twenty to thirty years to develope this network of constant infux of material (compared to less than ten for westerners).  The basic arguement was that the West spent less capital for more immediate (but lesser) gain while the asians spent more start-up capital for long-term benifit instead.

Who's got Mercury?

Lots of Radiation, so lots of fusion juice.
Small gravity well to climb.
Solar sails near mercury are about 10,000 times as powerful in the Jovian system, due to the strength of the solar wind that close to the sun.
also Sling shots around the sun makes travel anywhere in the solar system faster and year round.

If you want this economic / political plot to hold water there has to be some serious tension around the Mercury Issue.
