OK... so Jackson had to make some cuts and compromises to squeeze LOTR on to a forty-foot wide screen... but why, exactly, has the character of Elrond Half-elven been so badly screwed up? Why does Elrond spend most all his time in Fellowship (and TT by the looks of things) b1tching about how rubbish Men are? I mean, he's half Man himself, his grandfather was Tuor the Mighty, his brother Elros chose to be a mortal and was appointed king of Numenor, and quite frankly if it wasn't for Gondor, Imladris and Lorien would have gone under a long time ago. I really don't understand the point of what they've done to him...

That, and swapping Glorfindel for Arwen... grr...

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I surely never pictured Elrond like him anyway. only elve that looks right in the movie is kate blanchett and the guy who plays Legolas anyway, all the others were poor actor choices that look nothing like elves ( or half elves ) are supposed to be.

Acually men Elves etc all should look the same (ie no pointy ears) etc acording to Tolkien himself. Take the wizards for instance: First they were thought to be men (when they arrived), then when they didn't age, men took them for Elves. Kinda hard to do if the two races look different.

Personally I like the way the Elves are done but I feel that the prevous paragraph should be noted.

disregarding the ear thing, elves are supposed to be all ubber beautiful in a "strange" way.
Back to the ear thing, i think a proof that exists ( they don't age ) has more impact that a proof that doesn't exist ( they don't have pointy ears ). They're different than humans, and all humans don't know that much about elves, so... her... I lost track on the subject. never mind :p

Um.. where was this in the Silmarillion?

DG: The whole dislike Elrond has for Man is pretty much laid out in the Silmarillion. Elrond might be half-human, but more importantly he's half-ELVEN. The Elves were never well pleased by Iluvatar's idea that the world was meant for Men and not for them.

Hey, I always said that fantasy (and sci-fi as well) could use more strong-willed female characters. I got no beef with swapping Glorfindel for Arwen. :)

I don't think it's ever sid clearly ( mmh, tho in one of the unfinished tales book it might well be, and I wonder at the begining of the LotR book actually ), but they're ALWAYS described as unaturaly beautiful etc.

think for once from the movieviewer pov. Introducing ANOTHER character, to the already large list of characters (it is a 500 page book, for petes sake) would make this awfully confusing, especially as Arwen had to be introduced. She had to have more screen time, otherwise, if there had been Glorfindel, Arwen would have had, what, 3 minutes of screen time?

chopping my head? you wouldn't dare, that'd be a crime against humanity: a great loss for the world, plus many, many girls would die from sadness. you shouldn't do that ;)

Hey! I liked that crappy love scene!

Um... what I mean to say is... um, well, I guess I'm just a romantic at heart...:nervous:

*runs*

*runs back*

Hey, we're talking about romance here, right? Where the hell is CP5670 anyway? Shouldn't someone make some snide remarks about his affection for mathmatics instead of women?

*runs again*

I gotta wait until the 21st to see TT and I gotta get through three more law school exams in the meantime... I wanna go home...
