I think I just killed my computer...
:nervous:

I was just sitting there, minding my own business, changing the settings on a lathe function from 10 to 20 (the number of steps, hence the amount of smoothness). Somehow, my mouse skipped, and instead of replacing 10 with 20, I got 1020. Which was fine, and took only a few seconds, until I went to fix it, and the exact same thing happened, and now it's trying to handle 102,020 lathe steps, or ten times that many polys. It hasn't moved in ten minutes...

I get the world's most accurate modeled ellipsoid?

File'd probably be ****in 30Mb. But I fixed it. Damn fine program, that, just slowed down a little, so it took a while to close.

It's STILL doing that thing, though...

Set is as high as you can before it auto-updates the view-port and kills the computer. If you can get it up to 9 x 10^400, I'll buy you a Coke.

I did something similar using smooth subdivision on a geodesic sphere once. It took FOREVER for Lightwave just to tell me i was an ass and fall over dead. :D
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

hit the "reset" button!?

i don't even know what you're talking about, i don't do modeling/rendering/etc. ;)

i did that once with my resolution, heheheh way back on win 95... i was seeing how high i could set the resolution, and i had a crappy monitor AND a crappy video card (whadaya know), and i set it too high eventually, and the monitor just went black.

i tried restarting, and i'd see the boot-up sequence on the screen, but when windows started, the screen just went black (monitor couldn't handle resolution)... since i only had one monitor at the time, i was stuck.

looking back, can you believe i actually tried to change the resolution by guessing where i was clicking... ... like, i moved the mouse to where i thought would be the middle of the desktop, then right clicked, then went down to 'properties', then tried to find the tab.

... of course i never got it, it's almost impossible :D ;)

i was a n00b then, but i wasn't n00b enough to not know about safe mode :D  so i restarted in safe mode, changed the resolution back, and restarted... voila :)

That reminds me of the time I tried to portalize a sphere using hundreds of eight-sided cylinders with DromEd. I could hear it crying.

When I tried to run that Doom III leak, my pc just groaned a bit and then popped up an error message saying "not ****ing likely"

Stealth: Actually, I have worked on a blank screen on a number of occasions (always knowing roughly where things were, of course, and never on overcomplex interfaces). It's an acquired skill from using old games on new OSes.:D

yeah, lol... not nearly as happy as the ending i got when i decided (about 3 months after getting my first real PC, with Windows 95 :D ;)) that i'd screwed it up too much, so i popped in the windows 95 CD, and reinstalled 95 over itself.  it actually worked though... for 3 years after that, till i trashed it.  i had since then a "C:\windows" and a "C:\windows~1" directory :D :D :D :D :D  oh hilarious ;)

i didn't shut down or format or anything... i ran the 95 setup from inside the 95 OS... i still don't know how i did it, but that was fun :D

awesome!  i thought i was the only one that tried to guess where the icons/buttons where...

i literally measured with a ruler on the screen, then measured with the mouse...
i was trying (back then i didn't know about the right click on desktop --> properties) to go START (this was easy, move mouse down left, then a little up and right and then click) then CONTROL PANEL, then find 'DISPLAY' (i never got this far i don't think, cause i didn't know where 'display' was among the icons ;) lololol :D :D :D)

heh

safe mode is awesome for such situations  :)

but i'm glad you mentioned you'd had the same problem... i don't feel so alone now.  did you ever get it fixed by guessing where to click on a blank screen?  cause i didn't even get close

Ignore this if you want to - sorry about OT-ness

Speaking of computer problems, my CD-ROM drive has stopped working. I've reinstalled it (using the same driver) a couple times, but when I stick a disk in no lights turn on and Windows doesn't show it exists. It's a Mat****a CR 594, and I run Windows XP Pro.. any ideas?

Try flipping the IDE channels...I.E. if you have it on primary-slave, switch it to secondary-slave/secondary-master. Plug in what was there into where your CD used to be. If your comp doesn't see the CD, best bet would be that the CD is screwy, if it doesn't see whatever you plugged in that spot that isn't your CD, then odds are that that IDE spot is screwy...

also, check the boot sequence, etc.

check the CMOS, BIOS, and all that crap at startup... sometimes if the battery on the mobo goes dead it screws up, or for other reasons
