Now this is pretty cool (OT)
I was doing some research for a model when I came across this on an RAF site;

One of 2 designs for the Uk-Us 'Joint Strike fighter' programme, replacing the Harrier and SeaHarrier, incorporating stealth technology.... pretty cool stuff, considering the combat effectiveness of the original harrier

Ach. Stupid JSF. That's the Boeing model, which looks like a fat fish.

The Lockheed version just looks like a mini F-22.

My personal favorites for looks are X-29, F-22, F-15F, and the Saab Viggen.
Ahh... candy...
[whack!whack!]
Ahh... blood...

That one may perform, but it won't win a single beauty contest.  Hell, I think and A-10 would beat that ugly bird out.

And did you see the mouth on that thing.  Yuck!

Asthetics are cool but lets face it that thing was designed with asthetics being a secondary consideration, if it does what it was designed to do then you can just add a lick O' paint later

put it this way, i'd want a plane that could kick ***  instead of a pretty plane

I like the X-35 much, much, much better. Yes, it does look a lot like the F-22, but is that really a bad thing? The F-22 looks sweet, and IMHO the X-35 looks even sweeter.

The F-16 is easily my favorite fighter currently in existence, and the X-35, if chosen, looks to be a worthy successor. If the X-32 turns out to be better, so be it...but it IS ugly as sin.

Here's both of my current favorites together.

So, to make this thread somewhat relevant to modding...who's going to break these babies into FS?

Well, my fav ones are the F-15(High altitude dogfight), F-14(multi-role and versatility), and F-16(Low altitude dogfight). Migs are good, but they lack alot in avionics and software...

Also, I don't think that the fighter that aldo posted is that ugly, it is quite a cute actually

Plus, a beautiful fighter isn't necessary in the war, unless they figh saying, "my plane is more beautiful than yours!!!"
Yeah, I know you were waiting for a very nice sig, in which I was quoting some very famous scientist or philosopher... guess what?!? I wont indulge you...

Why, you ask? What, do I look like a Shivan to you?!?

Probably the designer of the Spitfire.

Raven, do you even know what an F-14 was defined for?  It's a pure interceptor (possibly the best carrier based one), designed to take out six Soviet nuclear bombers each.  Defender of the fleet.  Multi-role?  They're working on that but it takes a lot to turn a pure blooded interceptor into a ground attack bird.

You might be thinking of the F/A-18 Hornet.  And F-16's are great as ground attack fighters, for some odd reason.

I'd rather see it at an air show pulling off cool acrobatics than seeing it bomb the hell out of something. On the spitfire subject I actually thought the merlin engine in the plane was a work of art.

Really?  The Sptifire had problems with steep climbs, the engine cutting out - it was the only major thing the German aircraft had over it.

Personally, I actually rather like that JSF design.

The F-18 rules   (yes, F-18, over here they've been fitted to act as interceptors, since we don't really have much use for heavily offensive planes). The Hornet is evilly manouverable.

Heehee... the chances of anyone wanting to invade Finalnd are about the same as anyone declaring war on Scotland...

I love the EuroFighter design . It's almost as nice as the early design pics of it.

Then again I've got to say that, I work on it.

What that you say P60? and don't let the door hit my ***  on the way out?

Perhaps not.

The concet pic had 2 tail fins coming out of the wings about 1/3 of the way out from the central Hull, if yoy know what I mean.

Ok, then I didn't use the right word... versatile, it may be it, because watch: they can be used everywhere, due to the articulated wings... of course they were mad for interceptor, but they also perform great on many tasks... believe me. with closed wings it can fly balistic trough base defences and outruna lot of things, with wings opened they can maneuvre quite well, of course it is shoing its ages, but I still consider it a good fighter... and I ment the F-14 Tomcat, not the F-18 Hornet...
