Freespace the Great War
Does anyone remember or is anyone replaying the great war...
Didn`t realise that you could collect multiple metals untill I completed it for the 2nd time, don`t remember how many I got the first time I completed the campaign...

Extra metals achieved

Conspicuous Gallantry metals (2)
Commendation Metals (2)
Good Conduct metals (3)

Didn`t get all the metals but I finished the campaign within a days time.

Can now play all the cut scenes for fs1

Got to see the Lucifer explode on my Radeon 7500, even though the card had some issues, I was still able play it through, just had to restart fs1 after I had completed about 3 missions... so it worked out pretty well

Am thinking of playing fs2 over again since I lost my campaign pilot, can`t play the cut scenes for fs2

FS is still on my hard drive, but I don't really play it any more. Once my girlfriend is competent with the joystick (of the Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 variety, NOT the biological one!! ) I'll unleash the original FreeSpace on her!

I think medals can be referred to as metals. Not sure though.

Nope.  Medal and metal are not interchangeable.

For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. Replay the entire FS1 Campaign but with all of the followings completed:

The mission where the Galatea will be destroyed must be completed on at least medium skill setting, and you must save all escape pods. (Galatea survivor)

The mission where you must destroy the Zenith must be completed on Medium, and you must destroy the HoL cruiser.

Escort both Omega transports in Black Omega mission to the jump node and you must destroy the Anvil(GVD Typhon). Complete this mission on at least medium skill setting.(Medal of Honor)

Escort Bastion to the Delta Serpentis system with more that 35% hull, and you must destroy the Tantalus. Do this on at least medium skill setting.(Military Defense Shield)

If you have problems completing a mission, I can give you an advice. I have completed FS1 13 times!

That would not hurt ;) I have only a general question at the moment: is there anyway to make the AI a bit more bright? I mean, what orders should I give to my wingmen? They tend to get destroyed in a couple of minutes, it would make the missions a bit easier if my wingmen manage to survive :)

By the way, I am wondering if it is possible to finish the game on Insane setting. I must be a newbie, but I only get destroyed and wiped out at this level ;) Even on Difficult, the game is... erh... difficult, especially because of my wonderful allies :)

wait what are you asking WhiteLight?

anything regarding how to get medals or anything can be found on my website  :)

i play the great was at least once every 3 months... sometimes twice.

usually i'll sit down for like 4-5 hours and play it completely through (that's on medium)... on Insane (i've done it twice i think) then it takes more like 7-8 hours, and i'll do it over the course of a few days :D

I've never been able to complete this. I usally have to let one Omega die and avoid the Anvil. How do other do this mission. What am I doing wrong?

This is my best mission on multiplayer... Black Omega... on "Hard"... i 0wn at it :D

OK, well, see... there's two ways... one way is cheap, the other isn't... if you still can't get it, then PM me, and i'll organize a time for us to play it on PXO so i can show you.

1) (cheap way) = set all ships as space superiority (ulysses, valks, even hercules)... on your ship, have at least one primary weapon be the "flail" cannon.  now as you know, against smaller ships, this cannon does hardly any damage, but the force from it is very powerful.  i've gotten ships well over 200 units/sec with it, and this works very well... here's what you do
when you start out, get Beta to protect Omega 1 (the one that the bombers engage)... also get Alpha to protect it if you want, (if you have to).  get Gamme to "engage enemy" (they go in the direction of the typhon destroyer, distracting it and its fighters)
in the meantime, shoot the flail at omega 2 and 'direct' (:D) it away from the typhon, but keep going toward the node.  in the end, it will still be at like 58, but you'll have directed it all the way past the typhon, and it'll jump out :D

an even better (and faster) way of doing this, is going directly to the jump node, regardless of where the typhon is.  if you go fast enough, you'll have pushed the omega (2) to the jump node before the typhon gets there...

2) (not so cheap way) = all wingmen fly space superiority.  give Beta PhoenixV and other anti-bomber primaries and secondaries.  Fly an Ursa with harbingers.  as soon as mission starts, head for Typhon. (don't target Typhon, just head in its direction)... tell Beta to protect Omega 1, and when you're halfway between where you started and the typhon then tell Alpha and Gamma to engage enemy... (this means, if you time it right, they get to the enemies right before you, so you have a good 30 seconds while the fighter escort of the typhon is distracted).  now unload on that ***** for as long as you can.  After one run, you'll get it down to at least 50% hull before you die.  then go again quickly, and this time kill it.  around this time omega 2 will be at the typhon so you have to be fast.  i usually cheat in this part, with unlimited harbingers :o

good luck ;)

Regards
~Stealth~

Unfortunately I don't play multiplayer since my present situation means I have if not a lack of money then not enough of it to play any multiplayer games. Oh well. I guessing your first suggestion might work on single player, I'll have to give it a try when I've got free time, but does anyone have any single player stratiges. It annoys me, since it's only 'Black Omega' and 'Bearbaiting' that I can't complete all the objectives on.

Practice, practice, practice.  I played through the GW on easy first, then went back and did it on medium.  After many tries, I was able to complete all the objectives in Black Omega.

Bearbaiting is still tough, though. :p

The great war, to me anyway seemed a lot tougher to beat than fs2.. I wimped out and played fs1 set on easy, it took me a better part of the day... My reasoning in playing it again is because i lost my campaign pilot  and couldn`t play the cut scenes... needed to check out my radeon 7500 on fs1 and see the Lucifer go down, again... Haven`t tried it on medium yet, but someday maybe i will..

The Radeon 7500 did have a few issues and the screen would begin to flicker after a few missions, the only solution that would resolve this was to close fs1 and restart the game again...

Don`t get me wrong though, the Radeon 7500 PCI card is a good card, much better than my old voodoo 3 APG video card.. The voodoo 3, frame rates were a bit bland and made the game play choppy, this may have been due to a shortage of memory

Stealth, thanks for your tip... I`ll have to checkout your website

Perhaps because you played FS2 after having gotten used to FS1, and that made it easier?  I thought the same thing, but maybe it's a matter of perspective.
