Hi!

I am a newbie!

Don't eat me!

I have pulled Freespace 2 off my dusty shelf recently and come to enjoy it once more. I checked and to my surprise found quite an active mod community. Having zero talent in modding I decided to try my hand at adding a little something for everyone's enjoyment. I had recently converted some niffty fighter models from Starfleet Command 2 orion Pirates in to Starfleet Command 3.

Wondering if I could convert these low poly wonders I set out to try it. With much dificulty I have met success thus I present you with a Klingon Figther! it works fully in game (except for docking pioints, see below) and I had quite a bit of fun flying around in it and menacing the Shivans :)

Some notes:

Specs:
2 primary gunpoints
1 Secondary gunpoint
1 Lod
1 shield mesh

Other Stuff
1) There are no docking points. I have no clue how to add them. PCS seems to not like this modle though Modview likes it jsut fine..why, I dont know....I have been modding freespace all of a day :) So far I havent found many good tutorials

2) There are no engine glows or afterburner trails. SImply put I dont know how to make them...again I need a tutorial but found no good ones dealing with Truespace 2.

3) I would like some good tutroials revolving around the tools I have :) Namely 3dstudio max 5 and Truespace 2 (and lithunwrap)

4) There is no number 4

feedback is welcome, I will be working on converting a few more ships from starfleet command, namely the romulan, federtion, gorn, and pirate fighters. I may also attempt to get a B'rel bird of prey accross as well if it is low poly enough...

Ok, time to go to bed before my wife foinds out what i stayed up all night doing...

anyway I have never released a ship to community yet so :yes: :)

EDIT: no wait! I would have released a ship but I hever got the Exectuor working perfectly.... (it wasn't my fault by the way) Think i'll restart that... somebody might like it???

Welcome to the Hard Light Productions forums. Flamethrowers are under the seats, but these are for personal use only. The Plasma rifles in the forward locker are released only under authorization of an Admin. [V] God, and/or hyperintelligent shade of the colour blue. Exits are to the rear and left, but they're locked anyway. Once you arrive, you never leave.

Please note the prescence of several Shivans prowling the forums. Also note that your flamethrowers will be useless against them. Your best bet is to simply back away slowly, offering it a sandwich. If it's Carl, you should be OK. If not, well, at least it'll be a quick death.

On a different note, good stuff on the ST fighter. Not a huge Trekkie (more of a Warsie myself :p) but there are a few ST models around.Maybe time for a TC, yes?

If you click on my FAQ and then have a look in the modding section you should find links to most of the modding tutorials I`ve seen. One of them should have the answer (and they are all good reading)

Acctualy the source code project is what got me back to the game. The enhancements just roxored my boxors so to speak.

As far as Mr. Klingon goes I am -almost- satisfied with him, frankly I am not going to lod it as I have found Truespace to be a biznatch to work with, though I can easily get single lod models in to the game, most of the tutorials I have read(thanks for the links) seem to assume a good knowledge of either truespace or knowledge of the nuances of freespace modeling....but I am learning ;) So far I have Discovred Lithunwrap and Deep Exploration are my friends...and how to make PCS like my COBs :) Now if only I can figure out why the game crashes when I order something to dock with the ship we will be good to go...

PS.

I have added a Cargo Barge from Homeworld as an exersise in conversion.....should I post a link to it when I have the Klingon fighter fully converted?

Acctualy I have no clue if no dock point = crash


I added a dock point, fire up my test mission, pop off a missle, I call for ammo, it crash

I fire up a stock model (Uylesses) in my test ission, fire a missle, call for ammo, no crash


I jsut dont get it...

that was a psudo code style answer/question...
Ill explain...

No dock or incoorect dock does deffenatly equal crash (i had same problem but I got it sorted)

- that was the !!!

I was asking - ??? - if you had a doc point...

remember you need two lines for the dock fogot what they call it in PCS but in FRED you can tell by putting View menu --> view model dock points
zoom up to model and see if there is two green lines... is so :)  If not :(

you put the other 'line':rolleyes:  in the direction that the thing needs to dock...

It's still crashing because you havn't made a path for the dockpoint.

I'll have a version of it up in a few minutes with a working dockpoint.

Edit: Perhaps not. PCS seems to not like this model.

For making dock points, do the following:

1) In PCS, go to the Docking tab and add a dock.

2) Name the dock in the Properties field.  Proper syntax and form is

3) Add your first point.  This point is the "real" dockpoint.  Use the XYZ fields to position the point where you want it.  (Good trick:  First open the pof in ModelView and temporarily create a subsystem to manouever around to determine where your dockpoint should be, and then coppy those co-ords into PCS for the dockpoint)

4) Add a second point at the same co-ords as the first except offset towards the nose of the fighter along the Z axis by 1 meter.  This second point is used for aligning the docker and the dockee.

5) Go to the Paths tab in PCS and create a path for the support ship to use to approach the fighter.  Create the outermost point of the path first, and then work your way in.  Do not make the last point of the path be at the dockpoint, but rather make it be some distance away.  Name the path

6) Go back to the Docking tab and press the Add Path button near the bottom.  Assuming that the dockpath is the first (and on a fighter, probably only) path for the ship, one need not fiddle with the path numbers at all.

7) Save.

Hey folks! Thanks much for the help. It was all quite useful and now the model works perfectly,

:lol:  Saves for me.  But then after the first save, if I try to save a second time it crashes.  Also, when I exit the program, it crashes.  I just hope Kazan never gets into the areospace industry! ;):lol:
