I was looking through Luft '46 and I started thinking that some of these German fighters that probably wouldn't have worked in the air might look pretty good in space. Some of them even look rather Freespacey.

At least, they might give a modeler out there some ideas. :)

The Heinkel 162 (this actually flew and went into production):

Those are just the first I could find. There are some pretty interesting designs there.

Interesting stuff. On a tenuous buit nevertheless related note, I was in town a few days ago and found a war game set in the 1960s, the idea being that the first world war had never ended. The net result was a bizzare mixture of trench warfare and jet-propelled airciraft, among other things. Can't even remember the title of it now, but it certainly intrigued me...

Nothing like a good war to stimulate inventiveness...

[EDIT]

About a year back I got the idea to make an FS2 total conversion to a tongue-in-cheek Flash Gordon sort of thing (think MadTV's "Rocket Revengers"). Cigar-shaped capital ships, cheezy War of the Worlds-style sound effects, the works. Of course, my complete lack of modding ability kept it from being anything more than an idea.

These fighters would have been perfect for it though. Heck, even keep the Nazi insignia. :D

That wouldn`t be too hard a mod either. Texturing would be pretty simple (everything was silver in that kind of show). Shouldn`t be too hard to make a combined Flash Gordon/Dan Dare mod either (Dan has a large following thanks to the cartoon)

The wings rotate around the fuselage, kinda like a helicopter, and are spun up by the ramjets on the wingtips.  The only problem I see is the torque caused by the wings spinning around.  That and the ramjet won't work at low speeds, so they'd need auxiliary rockets to get them going, or another engine just for startup.

They did make a wind tunnel model of it, and it apparently was stable up to Mach 0.9.

Amazing what you learn when you read the page. ;)

And some of these planes look like worthy ideas for modding IMHO.

Especially this one:
