I was just thinking that it would be cool for Freespace campaign people to have a splash screen at start up, so when you start fs2 you would first see the splash screen like *Over The Top* and then the intro movie ( if present ) wil be played. So any good? or pure monkey crap?

i think it would be a great idea, for everyones individual mod to have the ability to show a intro movie and custom splash screen.

this should be done...

Custom splash screens are more or less already implemented.

I was thinking about something like the effects folder but then named *Splash* you put in your splash screen then the game reads the current file in it and displays it on screen.

Does modifying the pilot select screen background not float yer boat, then?

that can be done, and that's always been able to be done, since FS1. (the pilot selection screen thing, in-game...)

a splash screen, you mean like the one that comes up when you start FS2, where it has "play", "options", etc. (before the actual game starts, it's in windows, wiwth a little window thing... i don't know how to explains, it's before you actually start the game)

yeah, that would be cool i guess

No, no no no no....not the launcher.

1. You start the launcher
2. press play

where you normaly see a black screen for a while you see a splash screen. is that so hard to understand!?

Like operation flashpoint, you start the game you see 1 or 2 splash screens before you are plunged into the main menu.
In this case before the Player select screen.

Splash screens were made to be skipped or disabled.

But if it's something to display while FS2 is busy crunching numbers, that's a good idea. Might as well do a little status line too to display which table it's currently parsing.

OK, well if you'd said that in the first place we'd have understood. But the point still stands - why do you need this? What's wrong with using custom interface art? A custom pilot select screen does the job nicely, I reckons

i think he means having a custom logo appear once you start fs2 instead of it having a black screen

edit: that is gonna be a new feature in 3.50

Currently, the splash screen on FS2's startup does the following:
1A) It searches in the directory FS2 was started from for PCX files. If it finds any, it randomly picks one to use.
B) It runs through the standard search path in search of 2_PreLoad or PreLoad, depending on if you use 1024x768

2) FS2 displays whatever PCX was found in step 1

3) FS2 superimposes the logo "2_PreLoadLogo.pcx" (or "PreLoadLogo.pcx") over the displayed picture.

The idea is that screenshots or renders can be placed in the FS2 directory and will then be randomly displayed. There's no reason to watch a black screen for 15 seconds when you could be looking at a picture of a glow-mapped Ravana. :D The logo is so that there's some sign that FS2 is starting up and maybe provide some free publicity to the FS community. :nervous:

until one of us writes a splash.tbl, it just loads splash.pcx or 2_splash.pcx at startup (in my version at least)

PhReAk - are you talking about FS2_Open retail? I haven't seen anyone commit changes to the loading screen code since I modified it.
