My first serious Mecha drawing.
And as for my own opinion of mecha styles, well, the boxy-looking ones (Gundams for example) never did appeal to me much.  They're so...umm..."ungraceful" and almost appear to be hasily implemented.

I prefer a bit of a sleeker appearance to my mechas (i.e. I tend to favor the Eva style over, say, a Battlemech).  Having a more organic look, and an organic method of movement, in a certain way enhances the fearsomeness factor (that and putting a demon-head on top :) ) more than one might expect.  And an organic look implies that there's probably more to this war machine than what meets the eye; I mean, the shoulder missile racks on a Mad Cat kinda give away the fact that the thing's probably got some distance hitting power, but against an Eva, you don't realize that the thing has a progressive knife in that shoulder fin until it plunges it into you.

*sigh*  Alright, if you want to get technical, venom, then, no, an Eva is not a mecha.  But remember that an Eva is not entirely organic, either.

Now someone comment on my images.

Very nice!  I love the attention to detail on the Eva, with the various panels and such that were made using the softer lines.  It looks like something of a 00 and 01 hybrid.  And, I must agree with you on mecha styles.  I too enjoy the sleeker mecha to the bulkier types.  For any who are familiar, Zone of the Enders, a series fom Konami, features mecha, and very stylish ones at that.  They has smallish frames, yet also have a durable look to them.  Here are a few of the Orbital Frames from that series..

Anyhow..these Frames have a heavy influence on the current mecha I'm tweaking..  Should be ready for a final draft fairly soon.

EDIT:

And Venom, blah.  They're armored, they're piloted by humans, and they're fifty meters tall.  Organic, sentient, or what, in my book, they are mecha through and through.  Perhaps not 'true mecha', but mecha all the same.

Actually, delta, I was aiming more of a cross between 00 and 02:  it's got the one big eye like 00, but has a pair of 02-esque side eyes, giving it the triclopean appearance.  Sooner or later I'll do a front pic of its face.

And as for the Zone mecha, they're quite highly detailed (something I don't see very often) but the overall designs aren't what I prefer.  And it'd be nice if there were english variants of those sites, so I don't have to run it through babelphish...

Y'know, looking over the big Eva image, I think I kinda went a little too greeble-happy on the legs...and the hands need more work...blah, I quit bashing myself.  These are very early forays into mecha drawing for me, so why am I expecting them to be perfect?

Ah, well, the chest looked a bit like 01's, hence my mention of it.

On the note of the Zone mecha..well, to each his own.  Personally, I like the style.  And, there are English versions, but unfortunately, the website isn't as detailed as the Japanese version.  Also, the Mechanics page in the English version features the actual 3D models of the mecha rather than the beautiful artwork shown in the Japanese site.

And, for a first start, you're doing quite well.  Unfortunately, there aren't many resources for aspiring mecha artists like myself...  It's mostly a process of 'try try try until it looks right'.  I would recommend a mecha book to you, however it focuses on the bulkier mecha you seem to dislike.  Though there are more organic designs featured inside, it probably wouldn't be enough to suit your tastes.  For the hell of it though, it can be found and ordered at www.howtodrawmanga.com

meh, let me be a geek from times to times :p
So they're not mecha at all anyway. A mecha is a machine, They're not. It's that simple.

Meh, you think that it's not a mecha at all, I think it's not a "true" mecha...to each his own.

And delta, wEvil pointed me to www.polykarbon.com for more anime-style tutorials and stuff.  Maybe you might find something useful there, as well?

Been there actually.  ^^;  It's nice, but doesn't feature much of use I'm afraid...  Simply not in-depth enough...

I'd like to consider myself a wee bit beyond a novice artist.  ^^;  Besides, looking at the news page, the site's been dead for nearly a year, though its message board is still alive and kicking.  oo;;
