the Freespace bible lists that "All central government functions take place on, or in orbit around Earth."

What sort of goverment is that supposed to be. Did the GTA assume its resposibilities and extend past a military mandate after the destruction of the sol jump node?

GTA is a government.  Probably a democratic style somewhat like the United States (seeing as FS was produced in the US).  Militaristic in some nature but with many domestic values as well.

The GTA re-established a provisional government just after FS1 (during the ST timeline) which was nearly overthrown by the GTI in the Hades Rebellion.

From the sounds of it...then it fell apart and years later the GTVA based its foundations on the old Alliance.

According to the TVWP stuff, the GTA's capital was the same as the United Nations of Earth's, Geneva.

Thank you for the answers

The GTVA was considered a cross between the United States Federal Democracy system and that of the Roman Empire in terms of military.

The GTVA was then dubbed a Federal Military Democracy since most of the alliance was military, then you have civilians, and citizens, sorta like the politics in starship troopers, which was facist.

while the PVN was Fuedal-like,  it had byzantine era control.

Should there not be a separate name for the governemt and the military? Like The Federation and Starfleet?

That's what I mean, so the Government should be called the GTVA, and the military called something else, like The GTVA Amalgamted Defence Conglomerate.

Not really.  Trek is the exception here.  Right now we would say "The USA is gearing up to go to war against Iraq."  We wouldn't say "The US military, but not the US itself, is gearing up to go to war against the Iraqi military, but not Iraq itself."  By the same token we say that the GTVA is doing this or doing that when we more specifically that the GTVA's military is executing the orders given by their governement.

Actually, Bush has been spouting almost word-for-word that same ****, technically.

And yeah- generally the military has its own name, but it's no more an independent entity than, say, the Judicial branch, and is generally referred to by the name of the country or government.

Okay some semantic clearing from how it's all written in the game itself:
V-T war is the abbreviation for the Terran-Vasudan or 14 year war
VPE-Vasudan Parlimenary Empire, the Vasudan government
PVN-Parliamentary Vasudan Navy, the Vasudan navy
Vasudan Imperium- The Vasudan government post-Khonsu II reforms, a part of the GTVA.

The GTVA is in fact more like the United Nations with a bad attitude, the Vasudans are united under one government but the GTVA is a set of treaties to unite the Vasudan Imperium and Terran blocs that splintered from what was the GTA after the Hades rebellion.

The GTVA is divided between the General Assembly that oversees the legal aspects of the alliance, and the Security Council which is the military branch.

Though the General Assembly is an alliance of various smaller nations that have given up their identity to become the GTVA, the Security Council and the GTVA's navy exist soley to serve and protect treaties such as BETAC which are the foundations for the GTVA. This is similar to how the US military serves the constitution as opposed to the president, despite the fact that the president is commander and chief of the armed forces.

Bah! What it comes down to is read the FS1/2 tech rooms very carefully.

Here's a question though, How many represenatives does each side get?  Is it based on population(US House of Representatives) or does each planet get a specific number(US Senate)?  Or is there a set number for each side that can be configured according to the meetings agenda?

Ace hit the nail on the head for the GTVA.  Likely, the GTA prior to the node collapse was probably something very similar, an alliance of smaller nations that probably had their roots in Sol with their own colonies in the outer systems.  Which means when the node collapsed, the colonies were all that remained of their original states and created the internal divisions that allowed the Hades rebellion to take what root it did.  The GTVA reaffirmed the old GTA alliance, and added the Vasudans on for good measure.

As a point of issue, the war between the Terrans and Vasudans should be called the 14 Year War officially, as it may not necessarily be the only Terran-Vasudan war.  On the other hand, the odds of another 14 year war are pretty remote, especially with beam cannons.

Hmm, a purely defensive war could last 14 years. The First World War could have gone one much longer, thank f**k it didn't.

That's not the point.  The point is, another war lasting 14 years like the original is unlikely to happen.  It could, but then you'd have to come up with yet another name since you couldn't obviously call one the TV war and the other the 14 Yr war, as someone would get confused (especially on a test).

Oh, and WW1 wouldn't have lasted much longer than it did.  Germany was so drained that within a year or two, they would have collapsed anyway.  The entrance of the US into the war only moved up the timetable a bit.

On the topic of the length of the war, I think that there must have been some revolutionary advance in armor plating between the present day and the Freespace period to make ships as strong as they are in FS1 (destroyers and so on) compared to the weapons of the time. In today's world, the weapons are generally much more powerful than the armor, but that seems to have changed if you look at the gameplay balance and the fact that the war lasted so long but both sides still had the resources to continue fighting.

actually...it is in the FS2 tech database I think...it says that right before the shivans came, both the terran and vasudan economies were on the verge of colapse.
