It's official.  Freespace 2 has now become available for legal public access through the underdogs 'failware' site.

This bodes both good and bad for the community.  Good in the fact that now everyone (with access to a decent connection) can now enjoy freespace 2 for themselves.  Bad in the fact that now considered 'failware' the odds of FS3 are even further off than any glimmer of hope we had before (though thats not to say it won't ever happen in the next hundred thousand years ).

The file is 219 megs in size so you will need a good connection to download this really.  A scanned PDF version of the manual is available from the site also.  But to cut down on the file size a number of the in game movies where removed from the file package (a small price to pay for a free game).

Be aware that the site gets a tad slow at times.  And you shouldn't download more than one file at a time from the underdogs site as they have rules against it and will ban you from downloading further files for a while if you do.

Anyway, stop sitting there gaping at me.  Go forth and spread the word.

If you're here, you already own it. Do them a favor, and don't download the game, as they've got no limit of bandwidth problems right now- besides which, that version doesn't have voice or any but the final cutscenes.

If anyone wants to do the community a real favor, they can get all the cutscenes onto MPEG-4 format, so that I can send UD a SCP version of the game at a much slimmer file size and hopefully fit the sound in- without the message sounds to serve as spacers and triggers, a lot of the timing in the game is off, too.

That part's a bit questionable. Being the game is still actually for sale and I haven't seen anything offically making it abandonware yet.

Warlock: Freespace is for sale, still, not FS2. UD is very strict about not putting a game up for download until there's absolutely no way to buy it. In other words, if it's on HOTU, you can trust that it's abandonware.

I think there are some budget copies lying about, but the Interplay site lists it as 'out of print', and I've not seen any copies of the aforementioned budget pack in stores for months now.

I saw a copy of the white label re-release of FS1 and 2 on sale only last week so it is still available but it is VERY hard to find on sale.

(It was at the Virgin Megastore in Bluewater if any Londoners are desperately looking for a copy)

I live up north near Sheffield and there you can get both FS1 and 2 with Silent Threat boxed for £5.00!

So its become freeware then,  shame i'm on 56k...

I got the game immediately when it came out and thus paid the full $50, but at least we first-comers have had the advantage of experiencing the game at a time when it was technologically at the top.

...And have the advantage of seeing all the cutscenes, and having it patched, and not having to go through a long, dull process to get sound.

Anybody at least have any idea how to compress the movies? I'd try turning a DVcam on the screen, but that's lame and no doubt I'd get scanlines and other crap from doing so.
