The power of Vegastrike
until now, I had though vega strike was kinda lame, due to the graphics

http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/gallery/vegastrike_mod?&page=1

but I stumbled upon this: This looks on par or better (and higher poly) than full commercial games coming out such as Homeplanet and EVE

those are like 2000+ polies man..wow

Does anyone have any updated info on these guys. From what I see there are currently 3 projects working on a WC TC for Vegastrike. this one is: http://wcuniverse.sourceforge.net/

the screens have been updated on January 5, so somethings happening

definitely not quite Eve Online level (or commercial game level in general.. yet), but very, very impressive for a free engine :) I'll have to check this out in depth.

BTW:

that's cool. It really has evolved, and those privateer meshes are cool, they do more tha justice to the old sprites. My only complaint is that they're going overboard with the smooth shadings.

Wow, this engine looks really good, especially the particle effects and stuff like that. The models and textures are somewhat mediocre, but that can be changed around easily if it is an open-source engine.

the models are cool

you may not like the model itself (the look) but they are all high poly and stuff. Thos models look to be 2000-3000 poly. Show me a games with that many polies,. commercial or otherwise. They are doing great for a freeware engine. The shininess looks cool, though it is overused somewhat. Now they only need to add some nice backgrounds and particles..

The models look super smooth (the mesh, not the shininess) like they're using polybumping (advanced stuff used only in a few games including doom3).

I really dont see how you can complain.

are you being sarcastic or  not?

anyways, yes lots of polies=cool. Also shaders and lighting etc

I mean if you dislike the design of the ship thats another thing. Thats no indication of the engine though. I find the smooth shaders and gloss cool

no: a model that respects the original is cool. If you know the original centurions, galaxy, etc, you'd be impressed. Geez, everybody would go drool and all that crap if those had been posted in the FS2 modding forum. but blah, they're not for FS2, they suck. .

no if they look like a polymodel and not a space ship they suck, FS2 did a very good job of hiding pollys, many star/freelancer ships look good and some of the larger Iwar ships look good as well,
also there is virtualy no textures on those ships

I'm not talking about the maps, I'm talking about the mesh. the original ships are like that, with distinct parts and stuff. the dude who made those ships did them just how they're supposed to be.

-some of the larger Iwar ships look good-
so the rest looks crap? Ok I understand, no need to argue with you, you put tastes over skill. that's enough for me.

yeah, I agree: the arent really many textures on them.

I suppose thats just because they havent been developed yet (I mean drawn or whatever) or the team decided it looked better (or more like the original) than alot of textures. Its a matter of taste really

I've never played the original Wing Commander (though I'm starting to wish I had lol) so I dont know if they're accurate or not. But they look cool, and thats the main thing. I think that if you're trying to aim for the "realistic" look, alot of textures are unnecessary. I mean look at a modern warplane, or a modern ship. They're one colour, gray. Unless you're trying at camoflague, theres really no need. And since space if black, I dont think you'de like al;l the ships to be black to fit in hehe

Barbarian: yeah, it takes more power, but it also looks better. New hardware can support better looking ships, so they figure you can run more stuff now (better looking) than 5 years ago.

those ships are from Privateer, which is quite old ( been out a year or two after Wing Commander2 if I'm not mistaken ).
