GTVA Responses to violence
I'm trying to write up a mission for TI in which a cruiser and a freighter are involved in extra legal activities, but when they are discovered by a pair of GTVA fighters, they fight back.

What would you think the typical GTVA response would be to this? As a potential military threat (it is an illegal military grade vessel after all, and firing on GTVA forces) ie. with deadly force, or would they be more inclined to respond with a view to capturing the cruiser, disabling and disarming it - either as a way of interrogating the criminals and giving them a proper and public trial, and/or as an addition to the GTVA fleet?

i think that it depends on wheter or not crime has been commited before in a region. in a region like tau sigma from derelict, with high crime rates, i think the response would be lethal. but in a triving, peacefull region, the repsons is probably a warning, and then a disarm and disable.

Probably something like;

1/ verbal request to halt
2/ warning (use of force)
3/ warning shot
4/ Attempt to disable

I think the GTVa would only 'shoot first, think later' in a situation where the hostile vessel was at war.  Besides which, a disarming shot is better all round - take out the weapons & engines and there's no threat anyways, and good positioning will allow this to be done quicker than a 'kill' shot.

What aldo said.

Although they nuke hella ships, that's war. And its a little tricky to take POWs off of Space Faring destroyers with beam canons.

I have a question that i'll need answered some time. Do you think the GTVA are the Authorities through out GTVA space, or do you think they have Regoinal Cops and such like they do today? And do you think they would have lesser tech? Like maybe still using Ullysyss (argh) and stuff like that?

I think that there must be some local law enforcement forces, since the constant threat of invasion is too high to relegate a lot of the military vessels to simple police duties. However, it is likely that if there is some uprising coming up and the local police are ineffective or siding with the rebels, the GTVA steps in as soon as possible and eliminates opposition before it fully forms so as to avoid a repeat of the NTF war yet (this is what I did in PI). Since the two species have not really seen any long periods of peace since the beginning of the 14 year war, they must have learned to remain vigiliant at all times.

The GTVA strikes me as largely a sort of neofascist militarily-run organization- damn near everything is either army or ready to be requisitioned for it, and some of the laws hinted at are pretty draconian. Plus the logo fits the personality.

Such a state would likely shoot first and ask questions later- if the ship fights back, it would be considered an open assault. The cruiser would be obliterated in short order, they'd make a token effort to take the freighter, and if that failed, they'd blow it to dust.

I think they try to disable and capture it first,
but if that proved too much effort they'd just kill it
but most cruisers are a fairly trivial mater to disarm and disable.

I'd expect that with the Shivan incursion the entire GTVA would be under martial law via Admiralty Courts. You know what that means.

...This being one of those criminal cartels who can afford a fully-stocked military warship, evidently.

The fan-made FS universe is loaded with those, though. :p :D

It just wouldn't be the same if they could only scrounge together enough resources to make a rusty Apollo and threaten regional stability with their 'superweapon', would it? ;)

Also, if you're in the military, you're not going to show pacifistic restraint when someone opens fire on you. You're going to fire back, like it or not.

Sid.
