Zylon - ****ing stop it. I know where you live.

Blackie - Looks good, but yes, you'd see the outlines cos the edges aren't pure black or green or whatever. But nice sun. What proggie, if I may?

Axion Flare effects Photoshop/PSP Plugin.

Very easy to use, maybe not quite twenty seconds, but less than 10 minutes, and that's with revisions and stuff.

If you mean that you would see the edges of the square, then there is a very simple way around that using the burn setting on flood fill, but that still leaves a fairly substantial almost black circle around the sun...

Yes, but once you have it, you'll want to pay for it. If you do the sort of thing often enough, it's a very useful program.

Anyway, same image, just had the edges burnt away. The outside square edges are now pure black, but there's still a lot of almost black around the flares. If you shave too close to the flares though, it just looks cut off and crap.

I was planning on doing something like this for PI but started wondering, is it really worth it? I can understand making high-res planets, which are typically much more detailed and set larger in mission background, but the suns are more or less just blurry, featureless circles and are difficult to see due to the glare effect they produce and the glow map placed on them. For example, the one just posted, while good, could probably be reduced to 256x256 (or maybe even 128x128) without any noticeable loss in quality in the mission itself. I think it's a good idea to replace the default suns, but the size is fine.

BW: That other one you posted would work very nicely indeed as a normal background planet, something like a high-temperature gas giant. Mind if I use it for PI? :) (it needs the green stuff on the sides and some minor editing but that can be easily done, and you will of course get credit)

just make the sun smaller, at one point it will fit entirelly in the pic. there's no way around, anyway.

CP - Go Ahead. I'll send you the pcx if you want - it has all the right angles removed, and has a few minor fixes done.

Venom - The problem wih shrinking it is that eventually it gets so small that it can no longer be reasonably called hi res, or the image gets unrealistically big.

unless of course you're doing a near orbit mission (like Babylob 5) that near Earth mission rocked! I like in klingon academy drawing my enemies near the sun and finishing them off. Maybe same types of missions can be done in FS2?  Or maybe a solar facility/lab needs to be protected/destroyed.  A sun killer needs to be intercepted before sun goes boom! ? ect... I just think that effect would be mega-cool..
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !

of course... but you don't have much choice do you? one can do with a "not so high res" sun, but nobody will like a sun with black edges. at worst make a 1024*1024 map, videocards will resize as they see fit, it's not like you can do anything about that, so one shouldn't worry about it.
