running open freespace
Could someone point me to a FAQ that explains how to get open freespace to run after downloading?

I am interested in playing this--I have an OEM FS2 installed and running on a W98SE box but when I try to install open FS 3.5 it crashes and outputs stack dump errors.  Same result with 3.4.

Or is there an earlier version that is known to run on W98?

What's the way around this?  Could I install open FS files without using the installer and if so,  what do I use to open the exe file?

The OEM version I have has a bug in the ship controls--button one (fire) and the JS POV hat forward position read as the same button.  Everything else I use my JS for works fine so I know this problem is limited to FS.  Huge annoyance when I am trying to look around and accidentally push it forward...

No idea who the original OEM vendor was, if that makes any difference.  I am a new player who got hooked on the great war last fall.  Bought my copy of FS2 from a liquidator--think I must have bought the last copy in the country that wasn't  going for collector prices on ebay.

What does OEM stand for? (Edit: Original Equipment Manufacturer?)

I seem to remember compile flags for that, if Im right it wont work unless you compile it under that compile flag.

Correct.  Original Equipment Manufacturer.  It was labled as "bundled software" which means the same thing.  Supposed to be sold with a piece of PC hardward per the publisher's license.   Mine wasn't as it came through a liquidator.

Does this mean that Volition had different versions available to the updgrade button in the launcher  (which I used and upgraded to 1.2) depending on what  was on my end?

Compiling code is WAY over my head as an end user so this probably means I am out of luck for the moment.

if you have a decent connection go to www.the-underdogs.org (I think that is the right URL...) and download it from there. I believe that version works just fine with the sourceā„¢.

Seems I tried that once over my 56K dialup.  Blew up about hour 10.  I may try it again.  Is that something I could install overtop of my existing FS2 and so have access to all the briefings & cutscenes?

I wouldn`t install it OVER your current FS2 install but instead install it elsewhere and then copy the missing stuff over.
