Radeon 9000 vs Ti4200?
I'm looking at getting a new 3d card - nothing top-of-the range, but reasonably modern and about £80-125.  Roughly equivalent to my PC's stats*

I've been looking mainly at the GeForce Ti4200 cards, but the ATI Radeon 9000's seem pretty good value as well.  I'm looking for something with 128MB RAM, 2/4x AGP.   Better than a GF3, at least.

I'm not really looking at 8x cards because my motherboard doesn't support it, and I reckon it'd just be an unnecessary extra cost on the card.

So, any recommendations?

*AMD Athlon XP1400, 256MB RAM - may be upgraded to 512, bog standard motherboard and soundcard

I'd have to say the 9000, as I have one. It is the 9000Pro, 128Meg DDR, and only cost £84Sterling. Not bad at all.

I asked this in the other thread. How much would the Radeon 9500 128MB cost?

  • huh?.. Who?.. hey you kids, git off me lawn!
9000 pro hasn't let me down yet, it can pull off a decent fps in unreal 2, and having pixel shaders switched on in morrowind makes it all purdy

If not, then get something with 128 Mb of memory.

Wee bit above my price range IMO, though it is tempting.  Don't the 9500 & over cards need power for the fan aswell, though?  Or is that just the 9700s?  (I need to check my PSU's output, actually....)

This is what i'm considering;

you plug the fan instead of your cdrom , then the cdrom drive on the radeon, if you worry about how it works. odd, but it works, so...

Couldn't find anything from that link. :(

The power connector is the same as the power connector to the floppy drive. Also do take into consideration that it is a dx9 card, which the R9000 isn't (it's dx8).

scroll down a bit and you can see the difference between the cards.

I need an upgrade (I've got a GF2Ti DDR at the moment - 's'alright, but struggles a bit on Unreal 2's high detail stuff).  I'm waiting for the Xabre cards. They're not out yet, and I can't remember who makes the chip, but I've heard that they'll be massively powerful (GeForce FX-level), but for something like half the price. If it's true then I'd wait for one of those. Otherwise, the 9500 looks good.

Out of my personal experience, a GeForce 4200 would be a sure buy. If it's 128mb of RAM, it'll have a good 1-2 years ahead, before you'll have to upgrade, provided you have a decent comp. otherwise.

There's 2 listed.  Also maybe the GF4s below 'em.

  • R9000 PRO 128 Mb £83
  • GeForce 4 Ti4200-8x 128M video in video out £125 (£117 without VIVO, and 1 for £108)
  • Radeon 9500 64MB £126 :nervous:

Hope I got those prices right.

I'd say more, but I haven't really looked at these cards (merely skimmed through reviews), 'cause I'm not getting either of them. :sigh:
I'll probably get the 9800 PRO :)

why doesnt anybody consider r9500/pro ?
i can get a ti4200 for 240€
but a r95 for 190 pro for 220€
and the r9500pro is certainly faster than the ti4200

SCREW CANON!

It is FASTER! by 30-40% to everything but an 9500, (amazingly overclockable too) is supported unlike ATI (NWN and Simcity 4 definite examples). 9000 is a chopped up 8500 which is SLOWER than 4200. So there...

I am totally subjective on this. I have a 4200 and my bud got 9000 thinking he was getting gold. Well, he didn't! I beat him in all tests. (On a Nforce2 motherboard).

Old, tried tested and true, GF4 4200 is the only way to go!!!

No, not that GeforceFX expensive disaster.
